Aw shit. I was getting pretty good at avoiding spoilers. Oh well, that's what I get for my lapse in judgment. I hope the show does the scene well because it sounds awesome.

Really sorry. :( Hope it didn't ruin anything for you.

No. You don't have to apologize. I was busting my own balls for ignoring the flashing SPOILERS sign. You're okay.

I'm actually kind of looking forward to it now. Peter Dinklage can emote.

(Anonymous) 2012-09-08 12:34 am (UTC)(link)
Lol I just did the same. Somehow scrolled past the warning and got the spoiler. Oh well, it's not like I didn't suspect he was going to die anyway.

(Anonymous) 2012-09-07 11:38 pm (UTC)(link)
For a couple of secons, yeah, me too. And I feel bad for Cersei.
I think that the fact that it's a nasty but rather... relateable death helps. (I mean, I can't really picture myself getting beheaded, or getting a crossbow bolt in the belly or whatever - but I can imagine myself in real life choking on some food, panicking and dying.)

Seeing as choking to death is something I always fear is happening to me when food goes down the wrong way then yeah...as much as I hated Joffrey that particular part of the book made me feel bad for him, a little anyway. I mean, he knew for several moments he was dying so it also speaks to the part of most people that hopes they go quickly, as painlessly as possible and without realising. I guess.

I hated him and I couldn't be happier to see him dying. Coff coff

(Anonymous) 2012-09-08 09:53 am (UTC)(link)
Same here. When I was reading that part, I flashed back to when I was 4 and damn near choked to death on a chip. It didn't trigger a panic attack, but I remembered the terror I felt. I figured if anyone deserved to feel that,it was that smug little shit.

(Anonymous) 2012-09-08 12:04 am (UTC)(link)
I will pity almost any character, even one I hate, when they're dying and terrified.

Now, I know a lot of people who got to that part and were PISSED, with how much they hate Joffrey, that he got such a quick and non-agonizing (their words) death. I mean, they wanted something TRULY HORRIFIC, like for him to be eaten alive by wolves or some shit like that. And I totally get that, I wanted to somehow reach into the books and kill him with my own hands, but I know the kind of choking where your life is in danger is fucking terrifying and awful. And that little moment made us really get how scared he was, so it's pretty effective and well done. I'm comfortable with a little reminder like that that even a gigantic asshole like him is still human and perhaps not entirely beyond pity. (Further to this, the one that scene really made me feel bad for was Cersei. Foreshadowing, because to my shock I came to love her in the next book)

Considering the insight we get into how Robert treated him and how Joffery is a clear-cut sociopath that instead of getting proper mental healthcare (it's Westeros) he was given a place of ultimate power. I think I have a lot more sympathy for him, because of his age and situation than I'd have for say Ramsay Snow, Robert, or The Mountain.

So no, I think it's kind of a human reaction to be able to empathize (and one of the things that broke my heart was that everyone, including the reader was so happy Joff was dead, except Cersei, I mean that just floored me) and it was a really well written scene and fallout character wise.

That scene was perfect IMO. Can't wait to see how they do it in the show. And yeah, after pages of hating him I did feel some sympathy.

Oh, I definitely felt sympathy - in that moment, I think you're supposed to.

(Anonymous) 2012-09-08 01:55 am (UTC)(link)
I was happy to see him have at least one moment of relatable, human behavior and yeah, he died a scared, confused kid rather than a bloodthirsty tyrant. Still happy to see him die an undignified bitch death.

Yeah, I didn't. I cackled. And normally I'm pretty nice, but good GOD, that kid is a fucking sociopath. I may buy champagne when that ep airs.

I knew he died, because I can't stop myself from loving spoilers, but when does this happen? I'm about 1/3 through the 3rd book now. Being a horrible person, I'm kind of looking forward to it. >.>

(Anonymous) 2012-09-08 03:09 am (UTC)(link)
3/4, I think?

About 3/4 of the way through the book. It's a chapter from either Sansa or Tyrion's POV.

(Anonymous) 2012-09-09 05:52 am (UTC)(link)
It's one of Tyrion's chapters.

Oh Joffrey. I actually sort of love him in the show because I think they expanded his character just enough for me to have a better understanding of how he came to be the way he is. Obviously some is just the fact that I'm pretty sure he's a sociopath. But he was also allowed to get way out of control by one parent who doesn't seem to have cared and another who cared too much in the wrong way.

Also the actor playing him is so good. I really am going to miss him when he goes. So much craziness in that book (and then uh ... nothing in the next one? and perhaps the one after which I haven't read yet).

[identity profile] subarashiine.livejournal.com 2012-09-08 12:13 pm (UTC)(link)
Except that he isn't just a scared little boy. He was a pompous, cruel piece of shit who deserved exactly what he got. This is the guy who wouldn't think twice about having his fiancee stripped naked in a hall of people and beaten. I thought that chapter in the books was one of the most satisfying I'd read, and I did a mental fist pump.

I think one of the big points of those books is that even the "good" people can be dicks or make bad decisions, and even "bad" people can have moments where you feel sorry for them.

But yeah, I was pretty glad that he finally died.
