Lets be honest, it's not that simple. Her friend happened to be a werewolf, and even in the book there was an example of a werewolf seriously maiming someone he loved. If I knew my sister was hanging around someone who could potentially murder her, I might go a bit overboard in order to protect her.

Which just makes him a gigantic hypocrite, because, hello, vampire! A vampire with an addiction to her blood, mind you. He had just as much potential to kill her but he stayed around her anyway.

This is where defenders would cite his angst-ridden battle to leave her alone and subsequent failure to do so. He is admittedly rather self-aware in that sense.

This is true. It in no way excuses his behavior, but at least someone realizes how selfish he's being. Bella certainly isn't going to see it.

For real.

Bella certainly isn't going to see it.

Nope. She was totally clueless. Honestly I had way more trouble with her portrayal as a total and complete airhead than with the way Edward was written. He wasn't perfect but in context his actions make a lot of sense even if they were inexcusable. He truly loved her, I think, even if he expressed it in the wrong way.

They were both unbelievably depressing to me. I don't find myself debating which one is worse, because the fact is that the story would have been much better off if they'd both been scrapped.

If he was that self-aware, why did he pretend that he was "protecting" her by hanging out in her bedroom and watching her sleep? Given that he was the most dangerous thing in the neighborhood...

(Anonymous) 2012-09-08 12:13 am (UTC)(link)
It's been a while since I've read the books, but I don't think Edward was "protecting" her. I think he admitted that he was just ~so in luv~ and was being a creep.

I just read the first book recently, and yep, the watching-Bella-sleep thing was all selfish creepiness per his own admission without any "protection" pretense.

(Anonymous) 2012-09-08 12:15 am (UTC)(link)
Ehh, you can be self-aware and still denying and weak.

1. She's not his sister. And the werewolf you're referring to is someone who she has a mutual attraction to. So, at least some of what he's doing has to do with a desire for her not to see someone she might choose over him. That's not "brotherly protection", that's possessiveness.

2. Given that he's a vampire, HE could "potentially murder her".

3. How about talking to her about it instead of deciding he knows what's best for her without her input?

(Anonymous) 2012-09-07 11:44 pm (UTC)(link)
Did he first try explaining the situation? Talking to her at all about it?

And really, he's a vampire that has control issues - he is someone who could potentially murder her.

(Anonymous) 2012-09-08 12:10 am (UTC)(link)
Pretty sure he did talk to her about it? I can't remember, but I feel like he did, and Bella pulled the "but he wouldn't hurt ME" card.

Obviously Edward could hurt her as well. I'm just saying his feelings towards her hanging out with Jacob are understandable from my perspective. If I were her friend, I'd be trying to talk sense into her about BOTH of those guys.

Too bad she hates her human friends.

Yes, but would you then ignore her rights as a person, and destroy her property so as to impose YOUR will on her? Cuz Edward sure the hell did that.

(Anonymous) 2012-09-08 02:21 am (UTC)(link)
His feelings? Oh, sure. His actions? No way. The fact that you think it's okay to control a person in that regard has me side-eyeing you a bit.

This. He was never like "hey, Bella, I know you're friends with Jacob BUT he's a werewolf and that's kind of dangerous." He went straight to ripping engine out of truck.

Well, yeah, but if you went so far as to vandalize her transportation, who's going to protect her from your brand of protection?
