They were there first and they deserve to keep them all to themselves.

Hahaha, that's a fucking ridiculous notion on so many levels. Shouldn't they WANT more people buying and playing games so the industry can further succeed? And so more people can experience them, so there will be more people to discuss them with, and play them with? Wanting to keep them to themselves is just silly.

No they don't, because then they will have things like Female Sheperd and same-sex romance options (because games aren't for all men, they are for straight men, usually white but I think Asian men might be allowed to play too) offending their delicate sensibilities.

Female characters have been leads in successful games before now though; look at Lara Croft! Of course I realize that Lara's physique was meant to appeal to men, but she's still a badass, intelligent, positive female character imo.

And in games like Mass Effect you can easily ignore F!Shep, so if anyone's complaining about that they can stfu; the inclusion of a (possible) female lead is not taking anything away from them. Same with same-sex romance options; they aren't hurting anyone, and if just occupying the same digital space with a gay character is going to freak them out, maybe they ought to grow up (or just not play the game).

And yet, dudebros complained about all these totally optional options, despite all your logic. And yes, Lara is badass and awesome, but she also has boobs, so the dudebros are placated because their all-important interests are being catered to. Female Shep is not sexualized and caters to female gamers. I'm betting the meeting went like this: "How do we get more people to play this game?" "I know! Give the player the option of making Shepard female! Then girls will want to play it too, because the hero will be a girl!"

And as we all know, when a certain kind of person begins to suspect that it isn't All About Them anymore, they get really defensive of what is "theirs."

(As far as logic goes, dudebro gamers also seem to be oblivious to the fact that game companies NEED the money from women and PoCs and everyone else who isn't a white male aged 18-30 or there will be no more games for anyone, but hey.)

so true. and so utterly frustrating.

BioWare has been doing female leads for a long time, even. Jade Empire & KOTOR are also excellent games where you can choose to be a female character, so them including F!Shep wasn't a surprise to people familiar with their games, but to anyone else I can see how it might've been.

Believe me, I remember the hissy fit some people threw after Dragon Age 2, and to a smaller extent Mass Effect 3; but again, those people can fuck off or deal with it. They might not see the need for including these things, but that doesn't mean plenty others don't. And you're right, these kind of features help sell the games to a wider audience, which is always a good thing (for the gaming companies and the fanbase, imo).

If these guys would rather have no games than games suited exactly to their sensibilities then they have their priorities wrong, and can forget about it ever happening; things are changing in the gaming world, and even though everyone might not like it, more people are pleased with this fact than are angry about it.

yeah but this isn't the people running the businesses - it's the guys why play who think they're part of a special elitist club. so many of them are sexist jackasses. =(
