exactly. he is emotionally abusive. bella frequently feels terrible and guilty about her emotional reactions to things he does. he often tries to intimidate her with his FEARSOME POWER as a vampire. maybe it would be legit if it was actually for the purpose of scaring her away, but he is always happy that she doesn't, which makes it seem more manipulative than anything.

on top of which, when he smiles/laughs it is almost always described as 'mocking', and he is chronically condescending or judgmental toward her. he is emotionally abusive. there is no other description to the way he treats her.

they also both demonstrate behavior that indicates they are extremely unhappy around each other. although bella loves that ~crooked smile~, it is a very rare occurrence. more often than not, they are both struggling with the negative reactions they have to each other.

even if you can find justification to claim that there's no outright or deliberate abuse between them, they're UNHAPPY together. it isn't a good relationship.
