From my understanding it's as much about the fact he sends up most of the red flags abusers do [controlling, isolates her socially, constantly keeping tabs on her [and borderline stalking, iirc], and even is vaguely threatening [the whole thing with 'you are my prey, I just want to drink/eat you, etc'] at times], as it is any abusive thing he does. I've also heard that he basically denies her physical intimacy [the instance I was told about, he cuddled up to her on the bed - then yelled at her when she started cuddling back because 'he was just showing her the benefits of the bed', so not just sexual intimacy].

So there's a lot of examples I've seen put out there that, while they aren't violently abusive, are still abusive, send up major red flags, and hella unhealthy for the person on the receiving end of that treatment.

Wait, I'm utterly confused now. How is "denying intimacy" abuse? Is she *entitled* to his intimacy???

Also, when did he ever say she was his prey?

Denying intimacy upon behavioural conditions can be a form of control, you know.

Isn't his reasoning that him not sleeping with her is better for her? Like, he totally wants to bang, but he's decided that Bella's desires are unwise and therefore he's going to protect her from sex. That's definitely controlling, especially considering he repeats this logic with everything that Bella wants to do that he doesn't like.

Except it's not just sex. intimacy doesn't always mean sex. He's denied just about *any* kind of physical intimacy - which means in general denying her need for intimacy.

But yeah, it is very controlling - which is mega unhealthy, and a huge red flag, particularly when that controlling attitude, and withholding of intimacy [not just the sexual kind] is combined with everything else.

He's very religious essentially and thinks her soul would be damaged if she were to have sex before marriage. He thinks his soul is already broken anyways so he doesn't really care about his own end of the equation. I don't think it's controlling to stick to his religious outlook on sex. It would come off as controlling if she didn't want to get married whatsoever, but Bella just didn't want to wait for sex.

No - but by the same token, it's also him denying her need for intimacy. That is considered a form of control - and, yes, part of abuse, albeit not the physical kind

As for the prey - not in so many words, but he did say humans were their prey - and made a very big point about how 'intoxicating' her blood was, and how much he wanted to drink it. Was it an attempt to scare her off? Maybe - but it was still a threat...and last I checked [twilight] vampires were just as capable of saying 'screw off' and 'leave me alone' as anyone else.

I'm sorry but if that was flipped, and the girl didn't want intimacy but the guy was practically forcing her into it, and she said "not until after marriage", people wouldn't be calling the girl abusive for denying intimacy. That's ridiculous.

It wasn't a threat. He was telling her she was in danger by being around him, and that he would control himself to the best of his abilities, but that she should understand his nature was playing against him. He's a fucking vampire.
