He was worried about her. It was a douchey thing to do, yes, but I imagine it was a panicked, split-second decision sort of thing, not a deliberate planned out "I'm going to be a controlling asshole" sort of thing.

I can't remember overly clearly, but hadn't Bella promised him she wouldn't go and then tried to sneak away?

I'm not saying that's a great thing to do, but it doesn't make him evil.
