Re: American animals and a very familiar spider!

coyote

medow jumping mouse

little pocket mouse

pocket gopher

kangaroo rat

ground squirrel

meadow vole

big-eared woodrat

jackrabbit

white-nosed coati

bobcat

prarie dogpile

And a spider too!

Here it is:

I'm sure a lot of people have seen this pic before. Now you can find out its name! This is Phidippus mystaceus, and if that sounds a lot like moustache, well, that's why it's the moustache jumping spider. This one here is an adult female, and she's got a pretty interesting expression on, and the two below are both boys. Fun to look at, aren't they? THe adult females are only about a centimeter or so in length, so you can probably see a good deal of the detail that they display if you're looking closely.

So I had no idea we had coati in NA! I thought they were a Central America region animal. Cool!

Also, you tricked me with the "ground squirrel" - I know them as "chipmunks" but thought maybe it was just a similar looking new-to-me type of squirrel. Nope, same thing.

Ditto with the chipmunk!

As technically Mexico is still part of North America, yes, coatis (sp?) exists in NA. I saw several last year when I visited the state of Chiapas (which is adjacent to Central America, btw). They sure are cool!

Oh you are totally right! I spaced and was thinking Mexico was in CA. That's just embarrassing. Don't you hate it when you know you know something but still say the wrong thing? (Also, I know they're in South America as well, which I didn't say...ugh, that's a mess of a comment up there.)

I'd love to see one in the wild - they seem like such cool creatures!

No problem! It has happened to me as well. :)

I loved them when I saw them playing and exploring. I remember watching their caretaker in the zoo having to take special measures to avoid any escape or them playing games with him, as they are extremely intelligent animals! I once read in a South-American short story about how they are kept as pets there (I wonder if that's true or not), wich made me want to have one!

I once read about how skunks can actually make really awesome pets. Since then I've always wanted one - so cute!

Oh, those coyotes. I live up a canyon above a small town; whenever the fire station siren goes off, it carries up the hills and the coyotes howl back at it.

Is that a bobcat kitten (cub?)? It's so cute!

Awww, voles! Microtines are just little fuzzy balls of cute--but the spider could give them a run for their money.
