A. That's still a shitty beta. Really good betas help you figure out how to write the story YOU want to tell, and keep you from mucking your own creation up.

(Not that they can't have opinions.)

Well, I'm encouraging you to overhaul. Maybe you even title it "[Old Title]: reboot" or "[Old title]: 2012 Edition" or something like that. If readers did feel that the original version turned into a hot mess, then perhaps being up front with the fact that it's a makeover will actually bring people in.

(And fwiw, I've done a number of rethinks on multichapter WIPs ... sometimes after a period of years. Writing can in fact be more like a garden than a bronze sculpture, imo.)
