She is a little abrasive and he can be kind of a sap, but it makes them interesting. Their relationship, their marriage, and how they interact with other characters-- The Doctor, historical figures, etc.

They feel real to me. I've known people like them and I enjoy just how complicated they are. Real people are selfish. Real people do tend to get the short end of the stick. But they love each other. And that, in the end, makes them rather sweet.
