I thought he only did that because he was disturbed that Pepper seemed to be friends with the guy, so he was making sure Coulson wasn't single/available. Basically, a bit of jealousy on Tony's part, like when he said "His first name is Agent."

When he said "His name was Phil," though, that worked.

Um, lol no. That's a ridiculous convoluted explanation that has no hint of support in canon and that doesn't make sense because he's known Pepper was friends with Coulson since at least IM2.

I mean, sure you COULD be right, because it's not explicitly contradicted, but then again it's not explicitly contradicted that The Hulk only caught Tony in the air because he was shiny and cool-looking. But it's pretty clear that wasn't the writer's intent.
