I think honestly it would have made just as much money, but that's not the point. In a case like this, it's not about money so much as risk. Casting a POC as main character might have increased the chances of the movie not doing well, but more than that, it's a move that would be seen as outside of the box, creative, risky. And if you're someone with his / her ass on the line - which, in a project of this size, there's bound to be people with a lot riding on it - you're not going to take that risk, for two reasons. First because it is a risk and increases the chance of a bomb, and second because, if the movie does bomb, it just looks a lot better if you did everything the conventional way. If you do it the conventional way and it bombs, act of god, shit happens. If you take risks and it bombs, it bombed because it was a risk and hence it's your fault and you're fucked. There's investors who have money on the line, there's people with careers on the line, and casting a POC as a main would have been a courageous move, IE one that rarely happens.

Like I say, I really think that a POC main character would not have materially harmed Hunger Games' box office prospects, but it's just a wildly unlikely thing to happen, as shitty as that is and as that system can be.
