That's how I read it too! Like, being grown-up/mature/worthy of respect is dependent on being a good person and standing up for yourself and your convictions, being confident in your *own* manliness and defining it for yourself instead of by being masculine or macho.

I never felt like the show was implying that being a woman required anything less/different, mostly because Mabel as an individual character is more secure in herself in a lot of ways, so she doesn't need that same lesson ep.

I can see how someone else could read it that way, though, and that interpretation is definitely more bothersome. I'm sorry if people are being dicks to you over criticizing the show, OP.
