there's a border between writing rpf for fun and actually believing in rpf that i think often fails get delineated, both for people who don't like it and some people who engage in it

That's such a good point, and I wouldn't have thought to put it like that. I think when you're in an RPF fandom, it's pretty clear where the crazies are if you're not one, but it's also possible to a) fall in with crazies, or b) not see the intrafandom distinction from outside.
