I think to be honest, it depends on how a person is raised.

Someone who's been raised abusively (not to say OP, that you have been), and who's been told that a woman's only value is their worth to a man, might not be able to see why someone could do something that THEY HAVE BEEN TOLD is purely for 'attracting males' for any other reason.

It's not so much obtuseness as it is that they've been blinded to any other reason for 'being attractive'.

OP says they have poor self esteem, and it's quite possible that they've been constantly belittled with regards to their looks, and told that 'if only they made an effort more men would like them' etc, which is just feeding their inability to understand the other side of the fence, as it were.

THISSSS. For a really long time I only wore (mostly bad-fitting) boys' clothes and shapeless mom clothing, because I had been trained to think that womens' clothing which fitted to the body and made you look traditionally feminine was ONLY worn for the sake of getting men to want to have sex with you and only skanks EVER wore miniskirts or tops that fitted snugly around the breasts. It took me almost 5 years to get past this mindset once I realized that it wasn't correct.
