Prisoner was so...unfulfilling to me :/ I am totally willing to wait a long time with excellent buildup for a worthwhile payoff, but having 95% of the book be the characters ready to rip each other's throats and only to realize at the last minute that hey maybe a lot of it was UST and they kind of needed each other was...not what I'd been expecting (since I accidentally read Bound first and learned about the couple through 'hearsay' in the sequel).

I was also really disappointed that the epilogue just kind of skipped over everything I love about a romance--the get-together and those first few weeks/months of getting to know each other in the context of a relationship :/

I liked her writing, but...she's one of those authors that made me want to just shake her and ask what she was thinking. I tried reading her Lost Gods series too and that was just...pretty appalling writing tbh and made me wonder when she'd written it in relation to what I thought was pretty decent stuff with Prisoner/Bound.

(late to the party, but) this is *exactly* the reply I wanted to write when I read that anon's comment. I read Prisoner recently and the way the main characters got together (completely out of the blue and for no apparent reason) was kind of... really disappointing. I loooove long relationship build-ups (as it happens in Captive Prince), but I expect two people that started off by hating each other to gradually come to know and appreciate each other. In Prisoner they just acted like they were hating each other till the very last minute ._.

... I am really bitter about this also because it has put me off Megan Derr's novels forever (but what you said at the end made me hope I am not missing /that/ much xD)

Yup -- I feel like the book needed to be at least 50% longer to get to a point where I could see them getting together in a proper relationship. The thing was, I read the sequelish thing 'Bound' first (which isn't so much a sequel as set in the same universe a couple hundred years after Prisoner) where there were tons of references to the characters in Prisoner being this amazing couple who inspired everyone around them, a love story for the ages overcoming all these barriers, and so I went into Prisoner thinking it was going to be amazing and it just...bah :/ I liked her style, I liked her world-building, I just...didn't like her romance dammit :P

Bound had more reasonable build-up, I feel like (and the second couple in that book was probably my favorite of all four across both books), but was even more drama-laden than Prisoner, so I dunno if I can recommend it all that highly.

And yeah...don't read the Lost Gods series :/ Just don't put yourself through that. I got all the way up to starting to read the third one before I was like, "Why am I still wasting my money on these..."

She has some fun ideas, but overall I don't really like her writing style :/
