At this rate, especially after the Moffat Twitter deletion debacle, I'm tired of people complaining about "you don't have to watch Doctor Who." Not everyone's going to like every single episode of Doctor Who, regardless of showrunner. Get over it.

+1

I can understand being disappointed by recent episodes of a show. But if you've started to consistently hate it . . . I wouldn't say, "Stop watching." But I would say, "Stop complaining that something you didn't expect to be good wasn't good."

I'll be honest. At a certain point I was watching Glee just so I could tear it down and make fun of it. I found joy in that, when I couldn't find joy in the show.

Mentioned up thread, Doctor Who and Korra I actually love, and just have to vent when I feel there's wasted potential.

Hating on something can bring you joy too (see: all of the parodies and analysis that mock the hell out of Twilight)

I just wish he'd learn the proper way to cut a post already. (Assuming you're referring to who I think you're referring to, anyway.)

I hate like 80% of what Moffat Who has done, but I still find the odd episode that I enjoy and I still like the franchise and am fond of Amy in spite of the terrible writing that she is subjected to.

So, sorry. I w ill keep watching, hoping for it to get better or hoping for a good episode, and I will complain about the bad stuff int he mean time.

Believe it or not a lot of people who complain do it because they like the show and know it could be better. Or they love it but know it has problematic elements and ranting about it is their way to ease that tension so they can watch the show with less irritation.

If what you're saying is "don't like, don't watch" then how about you "don't like, don't read". I don't even mean that in a mean-spirited way, I mean that's what I've done in fandoms where I didn't want to read reviews criticizing the show. If they're just writing these reviews on their personal blogs or whatever then there's no reason you have to interact or listen to them. Let them rant and you can enjoy the show.

He only posts once per every new episode. It's not like some constant, dramatic onslaught of hate. For some things, I don't think the "well just scroll past" response is appropriate, but for this it is. He has an opinion on the show just like everyone else. And if one really negative review is enough to harsh your squee, well... then perhaps you should take a step back. Sometimes we see attacks on things we love as vicarious attacks on both ourselves and our taste levels, and Doctor Who is notoriously good at sucking people emotionally in.

After being flooded by 129090402 posts on tumblr about how great every single episode and how much a genius Moffat is, I seriously don't mind ONE negative review popping up in my flist, even if he can get a bit blunt and vitriolic in the way he gets his opinions across.

IDK OP. Sometimes you just need to vent. It's possible you haven't yet been disappointed by a show you love, in which case it is hard to see where the 'haters' are coming from. Some of us have been let down by a show in which we are deeply invested, and feel the need to express ourselves. In the meantime, we're just hanging around the fandom, waiting for things to get better.

All I can say to seeing the hate is to scroll on by, and find a happy corner of fandom who shares your views.

There is no critic more vicious than a fan who feels him- or herself betrayed.

Welcome to Supernatual fandom, where people who openly say the show 'was only good in season one/two/three' are still watching and bitching into season seven.

Go. Away.

Totally with you OP. I have in fact considered leaving the comm because of posts like this but luckily there is enough good to balance it out.

Bring me your hate... yes yes gooooood

(Anonymous) 2012-09-12 03:18 am (UTC)(link)
I understand that sometimes it sucks when you want to squee and you just see a bunch of negativity, but it also sucks when something has gone wrong and you want to rant and you get screaming back that you're just a "hater".

I don't watch things I hate. If something gets too horrible I will stop watching it.

But I also feel like directors and writers I have loved in the past deserve a chance to prove that they can be entertaining. Sometimes certain seasons just suck, and there's nothing you can do about it, but then you really like the next season so your complaints stop. Sometimes you have things like Doctor Who where things can suck for YEARS because they change that show constantly, but then you get a new showrunner and things are magical again.

I also just have a really critical eye, I can't help it, even when someone isn't all out horrible I can still find the flaws, I like to have a rant about it sometimes, it helps.

So no, I don't want those critical reviewers to go away. They bring me life. They make me feel like I'm not crazy when I hate an episode my friends liked. Sometimes I like to look a bit deeper at the things I like, even if it comes off as negative.

And there's really nothing you can do about them, either unfollow or scroll on by.

I'm with you. One is expected, giving a second chance and having it still rub wrong is acceptable, but after that it's time to move on.

There was someone on 109 who was doing reviews of A Gifted Man where she pointed out just how absurd and clumsy and insulting the writing was. I'd been long convinced to give the show a miss when she finally someone told her it was time to stop, and she did. http://io9.com/5861085/a-gifted-man-makes-me-realize-im-a-terrible-person She was still better and more even handed than most hate reviewers.

My favorite part of this secret is how many different fandoms have been mentioned in the comments, because it applies to almost anything. Kinda funny, actually...

Anyway, in echo of everyone else, the sort of person who writes harsh critical reviews is the sort of person who loves the series but feels it's being shot to hell. And like you, they want to share their thoughts and find somebody like-minded to chat with. It's nothing to you to scroll by and let them be just because they disagree with you.
