...See, I liked Trip because he was a relatively positive character who was southern - and that was nice to see*. It made me feel a little better about some of the 'Ew, you're from *where*? You must me -insert negative southern stereotype-!' reactions I was getting at that point in my life.

Though, I'll grant you, it's possible you could make a case that he's still somewhat of a stereotype in the whole 'mechanic' mold.

*Up to that point the vast majority of southern characters I'd seen in the media were either 'Evil bad man' or 'LOL, STUPID HICK'

He's the chief engineer of the earth's first starship and is probably one of the smartest people on that ship.

Yeah, I'd say that's some 'mechanic'.
