How to get involved in community management?

(Anonymous) 2012-09-12 12:31 am (UTC)(link)
I'm trying to bulk up my resume to break into the CM field - specifically in the gaming industry. Something I see a lot of people rec is volunteer modding a forum or community. I have mod experience but it's been years and all those forums are now offline so it's not even something I can link to.

The problem now is that I seem to have trouble finding any volunteer mod opportunities. I do post on a few forums but they're either way small and have no need of mods or way big and you have to be super active for basically years to get the mod position.

Anyone have any suggestions in how to find a volunteer moderator position? Or other suggestions for getting Community Manager experience? I'm basically restarting my career path and trying to break into the industry, so any help is great.

Note: I know a lot about how the industry works as I have some family and friends who work there. I'm also aware of the basic tasks of a CM so no need to give a run down. I know what the job entails and what to expect, I just can't seem to get any hands on experience anywhere.
