A huge portion of Joss Whedon characters- Xander, Willow, Spike etc.

This is why I'm worried about him helming Avengers 2, tbh :( He can craft characters like a mofo but he has no respect or fondness for them at all.

Yeah- I mean, I actually laughed when whatsisface- Coulson? died in Avengers, because I was just like, it's a Whedon movie, and he doesn't have the approval from Marvel to bump off Steve or Natasha or whatnot, so he's going to get rid of one of the agents. It's to the point where I think it would be a genuine challenge for him to write an entire story where no characters die to fuel the angst of anyone else.

Um, actually, Coulson's death was mandated by the producers. It wasn't Whedon's idea.

Also, Coulson was the only person in the movie who everyone other than Bruce has already met before the film and/or made a personal connection with, and whose death would therefore probably have the most widespread impact. So, I thought it was a pretty appropriate choice.
