brightblueink: The gremlins from Welcome to the NHK laughing menacingly. (It's a conspiracy!)

Whoa, I don't know if this is common, but...at the very least, every psychology class I've taken (which isn't many, it's not my major) had the teacher scoffing about how Freud was kind of a fraud and had a lot of horribly stupid ideas (although he still brought us a few advancements so it's not all bad, and he's important to understand because of the history aspects, etc). One psychology teacher told us that she had a Freud action figure that she bought for a laugh. I've had other teachers from other disciplines express similar viewpoints on him. I think he's basically considered someone who had a bunch of issues and bad science here in America.

Come to think of it, Welcome to the NHK! sort of makes fun of him at one point, too, and that's an anime, so I don't know if that's just an American sentiment. Until this very comment, I was under the impression that he'd been pretty much discredited everywhere.

Out of curiosity, do you mind sharing what country you're in?

Heh, I had the opposite happen to me. Some time ago I was watching this online videos the Yale University uploaded of the Psych 101 class and the teacher said what you are all saying and I was baffled, I knew in other countries he wasn't very popular any more but had no idea he was so discredited.
Makes you feel bad of loosing your time stupid this shit when everybody else seems to have moved on :(

Country is Argentina.

LOL "stupid" should saying "studying", which has to be the best Freudian slip ever xD
brightblueink: Image: Satou from Welcome to the NHK running and shouting. Text: Revolution (japanese symbol: da)! (Revolutionda!)

Oh man. Thank goodness for the internet, I guess! Sorry things are so frustrating in Argentina. :(

I don't know how likely this is, but I hope that once you graduate and establish yourself in the psychology community you might be able to help bring a change to it? At least you can see him for what he was!

Heh yay! There are not a ton of opportunities but definitely some possibilities to further one studies in Cognitive therapy or Neuroscience and I'm totally going for that! I just have to tolerate the 5 years of Freudian nonsense I guess.
