Also, y'all is a beautiful, beautiful word and everyone is just jealous that they can't pull it off.

I actually had someone tell me that they were surprised I was so smart because the first time we met I pronounced "ten cents" with an accent. Of course I put on my thickest accent and thanked them for such an awfully sweet compliment that made me happier than a pig set down on a birthday cake.

(Anonymous) 2012-09-12 05:09 am (UTC)(link)I totally get your first paragragh though. I was taught at a young age that girls did not play drums or build technology, activities associated with men. So, for the longest time after I thought I was the wrong gender because I should be a boy! Still working through the consequences of that...

I am totally freaked out by all these weird attitudes about accents. I'm trying to imagine that being said to anyone in any context regarding an accent or regional dialect and it not sounding incredibly offensive. I can't. Like how do you deal with this idiocy. I am amazed.

Of course, I've got a huge Californian slur going on. I swear, it's a slur, not an accent. I hate going to other states, especially the east coast, because either people think I'm some glamorous fop or a stupid "totally righteous" mix of surfer dude, valley girl, and hippie. Sometimes it's not worth it to open my mouth.

I'd love to hear your accent. It reminds me when I met a bank teller and I asked where he was from, thinking he was from the South. Turns out he was from my city. It was really cool.
