I'm from Texas as well but do not have an immediately noticeable accent (sometimes specific words or if I'm angry/tired you can hear it a little) either and I have been congratulated on that. >:( When that happens I take note and at the first possible opportunity will correct the person on something in the thickest Texas accent I have.

Also, y'all is a beautiful, beautiful word and everyone is just jealous that they can't pull it off.

ugh I hate it when people congratulate me on it!! Like I should be so proud of this amazing feat because of course I would never want to sound like I was from where I am from :\ No. Just no. In my area accents aren't that common, that's all there is to it. I sometimes wonder if the people who offer congratulations imagine those of us without accents sitting alone in our rooms staring at a mirror saying "Did. You. Eat. Yet? No. Do. You. Want. To?" very slowly for hours at a time.

It's sort of the same pissy feeling I get when a guy tells me he thinks I'm more rational or cooler than other girls, "one of the guys", or "not like most girls". Like I'm supposed to be embarrassed I'm a woman and so grateful and excited I've overcome my "inferiority" long enough for a guy to condescended to deem me a human being.

I actually had someone tell me that they were surprised I was so smart because the first time we met I pronounced "ten cents" with an accent. Of course I put on my thickest accent and thanked them for such an awfully sweet compliment that made me happier than a pig set down on a birthday cake.

I didn't get why your second paragraph was a bad experience until I read it again. Shesh! You sound like the nicer person in that exchange.

I totally get your first paragragh though. I was taught at a young age that girls did not play drums or build technology, activities associated with men. So, for the longest time after I thought I was the wrong gender because I should be a boy! Still working through the consequences of that...

If a guy says something like that to me now I nod and smile and cease giving him any of my attention. I used to have a boyfriend like that and the disconnect was too much. Not fair maybe, but dude it's not my job to convince you that women are just regular people if you've managed to miss that fact so far.

I am totally freaked out by all these weird attitudes about accents. I'm trying to imagine that being said to anyone in any context regarding an accent or regional dialect and it not sounding incredibly offensive. I can't. Like how do you deal with this idiocy. I am amazed.

I have no idea. I'm continuously surprised by it. I just can't wrap my head around the fact that someone thinks that is a genuine compliment.

This whole thread makes me so sad. I love southern accents. I find them very charming. It curls around the ear in a sweet way.

Of course, I've got a huge Californian slur going on. I swear, it's a slur, not an accent. I hate going to other states, especially the east coast, because either people think I'm some glamorous fop or a stupid "totally righteous" mix of surfer dude, valley girl, and hippie. Sometimes it's not worth it to open my mouth.

The part of California I'm from was *really* rural when I was a kid and slight Southern accents were oddly common, so I missed out on the usual state accents. Although I do say 'cool' and 'hella'.

Southern accents were probably common because during the dustbowl a lot of farmers moved to California. So many, in fact, it even affected the accents of urban area dwellers. I'm quite likely to hear y'all bandied about.

I'd love to hear your accent. It reminds me when I met a bank teller and I asked where he was from, thinking he was from the South. Turns out he was from my city. It was really cool.

See, I don't really mind so much falling into the "djeat yet? Awri'" box, and I sort of enjoy admitting I like NASCAR and the Three Stooges and such. I like to intersperse my $10 words with that drawl and enjoy people's reactions when I vocally approve of gay marriage, women's choice, social welfare, affordable college and *reasonable* gun ownership rights. I don't know, I figure maybe it helps some people get over their distrust of the South that way.
