OMG yes, I've wanted something like this for forever. I would post all my old WIPs for other people to pic up and continue/re-write if they wanted.

Some comms have "Adopt this fic/plot bunny!" topics.

(or, you could always write to the author, see if they're willing to discuss the story, adn then finish it yourself as drawerfic?)

That would be a great comm. There are about three fics in my particular fandom that would make me burst into a cloud of orgasmic confetti should they get finished. I am at the point where I've given up on the originating authors, as wonderful as they were. It's not fair to write a great story, then leave it hanging. At least give your fans a final summary of how it would have ended could you actually be arsed to finish it.

I always worry that abandoned fics were written by people who have suffered some tragedy and are lying paralyzed somewhere in a facility, never able to finish their fics. Or died and no one in fandom ever knew who they really were.

Pretty sure at least one fic author I was following died. The fics she was working on were too ambitious (about ten books worth, with future parts listed on site) for anyone to abandon so abruptly and completely, without any indication of what happened. It's sad, but it does happen.

Yes, that's the way I think too. Once I commented on page , where author hasn't updated for 2 months ( and she used to update daily) and then get a lot of hateful comments for spreading panic. So I don't do that anymore , but that's basically the first thing that comes into my mind.

personally i just make it a rule to never read wips. this doesn't apply just to fanfic, either. i didn't read hp until it was completely finished, and there are other series i haven't read and won't until they're done, even though i really want to. and i never think twice about that decision, especially after hearing fans complain about asoiaf. seriously, fuck that.

that's

that is a wonderful description of wips. they are exactly like that. i mean, i like the buildup to the orgasm more than the orgasm itself, but YOU ARE COMPLETELY RIGHT. WIPs leave me hanging :( (now it is a high-five metaphor?)

sort of related, i'd pay real money for my favourite fic ever to be completed.
