I think this is tricky, actually. There are websites/communities where open critique really... isn't okay, or at least not taken well. I personally disagree with that; I think once you put something out there, you've got to accept that people may not like it. But I go to one forum where people really write just to have fun, and don't really take it so seriously they want to be told what mistakes they made. I've made the mistake of criticizing someone at such a site before, and man, did I get a backlash. At the same time, people had my back, because that's what good mods do.

Also, I think the writer clearly just wants to be nasty. And that's not cool.

Well, I guess if it's part of the community culture to not say anything negative then yeah, you probably shouldn't. When in Rome, etc. I probably wouldn't hang out in a community like that, though. I've tend to find that when sites get too uptight about that sort of thing the quality of discussion (and the writing!) tends to suffer.

And yeah, even if it's not cool to criticize in the forum OP is in, the harassment from the writer and her friends is not cool.
