Workout music rec thread?

(Anonymous) 2012-09-13 12:55 am (UTC)(link)
I like high BPM with catchy beats but they have to be lyrically engaging or I zone too far out. Songs that tell stories or just have quirky lyrics are great. I really like rockin' guitar solos.

Mostly electronic music or anything fast-paced. Or anything that makes me wanna dance, because then I get filled with energy I wanna burn off anyway.

Might be helpful if we knew what kind of music you already like. And what do you mean by "high" BPM exactly?

What is your feeling on dubstep, covers, remixes, and mashups?

Off the top of my head

Lastnight I had a little too much fun when
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O-jOEAufDQ4
came up on shuffle.

My brother has really similar taste to you. I make him playlists all the time and these have been the biggest hits with him.

Voltaire
MC Lars
Dillinger Four
Blue Öyster Cult
Marina & The Diamonds
L7
Pansy Division
Kimya Dawson
KRS-One
Your Favorite Martian
Cake
Johnny McGovern
Misfits
AWOLNATION
Run DMC, Motley Crue & ACDC if that isn't too obvious?

BPM = beats per minute?

I second CAKE.

I meant what range BPM does the OP consider high? Opinions on that seem to vary and it will help me narrow down what OP is looking for.

Oh, yeah. :P

I just recced artists who have "faster" songs since OP didn't give us a frame of reference. (Like, Regina Spector 'Field Below'' vs 'Hotel Song,' where the latter has a faster, quirkier beat.)

if you're down with accordions and fiddles in your music, i absolutely recommend gogol bordello. they make up the majority of my workout music. Super Taranta! is my favourite album, and my favourite song of theirs is Dub the Frequencies of Love, hands down. gives me goosebumps just listening to. Smarkatch, Forces of Victory, Strange Uncles From Abroad, Ultimate, Indestructible and Super Taranta! are some other really good ones (although super taranta is largely instrumental. still very quick and upbeat)
easily one of my favourite bands of all time

i've successfully gotten my mother interested in gogol bordello in the past few months, so i'm feeling mighty accomplished

I seconded CAKE.

Bright Light Social Hour (the majority of their album)
Blitzen Trapper
Best Coast
Regina Spektor (some)
Minus the Bear
Electric Six
The Aquabats

For quirky, fucked up lyrics you can't beat King Missile or Guissepe Andrews.
Also, Drive-By Truckers. (I particularly like their song 'Fireplace Poker.')

Seconding most of this but especially Electric Six, some nights when I can't decide on a playlist I just listen to one of their albums.

I like anything by Girl Talk who makes free remixes. I have a program for my ipod that will change the BPM too, and these always get my butt moving on my elliptical

"Run Dry (X Heart X Fingers)" by Patrick Stump is literally my favorite thing when it comes to workout music.
