New fall TV shows you're looking forward to?

(Anonymous) 2012-09-13 01:52 am (UTC)(link)
The new US fall TV season is almost upon us and with all the fall previews out, I was wondering what everyone is excited to watch.

I’m really looking forward to:

Last Resort: US nuclear sub crew kind of goes rogue after refusing to fire on Pakistan. Conspiracies and paranoia abound. Andre Braugher as the captain.

Nashville: The country music industry – veteran (Connie Britton) vs. ingénue (Hayden Panettiere).

I will also definitely be checking out:

Vegas: Cowboy sheriff (Dennis Quaid) vs. mobster (Michael Chiklis) set in the 1960s.

Revolution: The night the lights went out, um, everywhere. Then 15 years later – guns have been outlawed, there are rebels and militias and the possibility of turning everything back on again.

Elementary: Gee, I’m not sure what this one’s about. Seriously, though, Sherlock Holmes (Jonny Lee Miller) and Dr. Watson (Lucy Liu) in New York helping to solve crimes.

I’ve already seen the first couple of episodes of Go On (Matthew Perry as a recently widowed sports talk radio guy who is doing group therapy). It’s funny and sweet and sad and sometimes it tries a little too hard, but I like it so far. I’m not sure about The New Normal (A gay couple (a campy TV producer and a practical gynecologist) that wants to have a baby, their sweet surrogate with her precocious daughter and her bigoted grandmother, plus the sassy assistant of the producer). It kind of feels like everything’s turned up to eleven.

You know, it really doesn't look like a great season, and there's nothing I'm really excited about. I'll definitely be keeping track of Revolution and Vegas, but I'm not super pumped about either. Revolution COULD be good but I think it's more likely that it won't, unless the writing staff really knows what it's doing. There's a few sitcoms that look cool, Go On, Ben and Kate, but they're also very generic and low-investment. And Next Caller kind of pushes my Newsradio buttons and I really like Collette Wolfe but on the other hand it also stars Dane Cook sooooooooooo yeah.

But thankfully it feels like there's a ton of shows that are still on that are really good or coming into their own for me to watch, so I'm not sweating it. Off the top of my head Person of Interest, Revenge, New Girl, Happy Endings, Suburgatory, and Grimm, not to mention Parks and Rec and Community. So I'm not worried.

I'm excited for Revolution and Elementary, mostly, but I'm going to try out as many new TV shows as I possibly can this year (partially because I'm a film studies major and partially because I just like TV). I heard fairly good things about the pilot to 666 Park Avenue, so we'll see!

I love watching stuff that's supposed to be set in Nashville. They always get stuff so wrong, it's great.

I am obsessed with watching Once and pointing out (to myself) all the Maine inaccuracies. It's stupid because it's just all "our trees don't look like that. Our cliffs don't look like that." But it amuses me so much to notice the little bits. (Thank goodness nobody tries for the accent.)

I think that's true of pretty much any show that's set somewhere besides Los Angeles or maaaaaaybe New York. Lord knows I'll do the same with any show set in San Francisco.

IDK, what about Chicago? There's a handful of movies set/filmed there...

And I still need to see Robert Altman's Nashville. My husband says it's terrible but it's actually filmed in Nashville in the 1970s. Back when Lower Broadway was really seedy with porn stores or strip clubs or whatever they had down there at the time. I think seeing places you know well on film negates any inaccuracies for me

Apparently, Nashville is actually going to be filmed in Nashville. But I'm sure they'll make mistakes or take shortcuts with geography.

I watched the Revolution pilot, and so far the story, characters and fight scenes are good enough that I overlook all the shady science.

I'm just waiting for Dexter to come back.

Spoiler-y statement ahead...scroll on!

It's going to be a glorious, incestuous trainwreck.

I'm giving Revolution a try because I think that Abrams has some potential, and post-technological-apocalypse science fiction appeals to me.

I'll give Elementary a try as well.
