I think it might be that old trope of one person making all the decisions, and being really cruel, and people thinking it's okay because it's "in character"? Not usually physical abuse, but the one character runs hot and cold at the drop of a hat, is forceful to an extent that would make any rational person quietly remove them from their life...

It happens a lot in House, for obvious reasons, and runs hand in hand with bad writing.
