I...don't think the OP said they think autism doesn't exist? Just they don't believe any of the people that use it as an excuse [that they've seen] has it? At least, that's how I read that part. -shrugs-

Re: DA

(Anonymous) 2012-09-13 02:33 am (UTC)(link)
You read: "I have not and will never ever believe anybody on the internet who says they have autism." as: "The people I've met have used autism as an excuse, but I still believe it exists"?

Interesting.

Re: DA

(Anonymous) 2012-09-13 02:47 am (UTC)(link)
Key words: "On the internet" and "Who says they have"

I'll admit, this is probably colored by own experiences a bit, but people don't tend to bring up autism unless there's a reason to bring it up - and in fandom that's usually 'You can't blame me! I have autism so I didn't know it was wrong to do it!' Plus 'I don't believe people who say it on the internet' =/= 'I don't believe it anywhere, ever!'

Re: DA

DA

Thank you. I tend to be skeptical of anybody who offers that much unwarranted TMI to complete strangers, and not just in regards to autism. Anybody who pulls the "I have XYZ Disorder, stop calling me out on my shit!" card gets the side-eye from me, no matter what XYZ Disorder is.

Re: DA

(Anonymous) 2012-09-13 03:03 am (UTC)(link)
Here's the thing, yeah people use autism (and other diagnosi) as an excuse. But did it ever occur to you that people with certain types of autism might be bringing up in seemingly random places where there was no reason to bring it up, might be doing so because they have some type of problem where they don't recognize or understand "proper" social interaction? Like, say, autism?

This is exactly the same thing as dudes in gaming saying they won't believe you're a girl until you show your tits because hey, no girls on the internet or hey, all "girls" I've talked to have really just guys using that as a ploy to get free shit from guys.

I mean this person in OPs story sounds like a jerk, but to extrapolate from that to say they'll never believer anyone ever who says they have autism? That's just dumb.

Re: DA

(Anonymous) 2012-09-13 03:36 am (UTC)(link)
Doesn't negate the fact that every person I have ever seen to offer up this information had a case of Special Snowflake Syndrome to go along with their self-diagnosed autism. Which is why I tend to side-eye and avoid people who just offer up that info from the start. If that's the most important thing you have to tell me about yourself, I'd rather steer clear of you.

OP says they never ever believe anybody ever when they say they have autism on the internet. Not just when it's used as an excuse. Ever. It's not hard to conclude that they think it's nonexistent.

No. "On. The. Internet."

It's easy to hide behind a handle and SAY you have it when you don't. It's WAY harder to hide that IRL. So, you can fuck off now.

Re: DA

[personal profile] riddian 2012-09-13 01:45 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes. Ever.

For example, we're on the internet right now. Say I bring up my Asperger's in this discussion. It's not being used as an excuse for anything. Does OP believe me? Nope! It's on the internet! Clearly I'm lying and just want attention because real people never mention it ever and rah rah blah blah blah.

Yes, it's easy to hide behind and fake a condition. That doesn't mean everyone is lying about it.

Re: DA

(Anonymous) 2012-09-13 02:13 pm (UTC)(link)
Nope, I'm more likely to believe you're a projecting idiot who failed reading comprehension forever.

Re: DA

[personal profile] otakugal15 2012-09-13 05:45 pm (UTC)(link)
Nope. Never.

Don't believe you either. Because you're being an ass trying so hard to make me believe EVERYONE who says they have it on the internet has it. Sorry, but no.

If I ever meet you IRL and can see the signs? Then I'll believe you. Until then? Nope. Can't prove it over the 'net just by words alone. So nope. And I will continue to do so since this epidemic of Aspies started up over the last year or so here on the net.

Also, agree with the above nonny.

NA

Wow, better to be rude to and deny the valid identity of people to their face than be the occasional sucker, AMIRITE? Your reasoning is solid if selfish and petty and hurtful. I don't have a dog in this fight but your comment strikes me as extreme navel-gazing. But it's okay! Cos "aspies" don't have the power - you do! There are no consequences for you except being called a douche! Rock on!

Re: DA

(Anonymous) 2012-09-13 06:27 pm (UTC)(link)
In this case, "douche" is a compliment. Thank you.

*laughs at the thought that her brother has no power*

Oh nonny!! you make me laugh so much!!

Alos....laughing at everyone bypassing one key phrase in this ENTIRE debate.

I DON'T BELIEVE PEOPL ON THE INTERNET WHO SAY THEY HAVE AUTISM/DISORDER.

IRL? Sure!!! If I know them and they are comfortable enough to say that they do, but for the most part, that's none of my business unless, for whatever reason, it becomes my business.

Oh my God, it's like arguing with curseangel. EVERYONE who claims to be not a homophobe on the spectrum is a bigot liar! There are no exceptions!

I am at least glad to see that I didn't misread and you do, in fact, fully agree with OP. Rock on with your bigot bad self, bb.

Re: DA

(Anonymous) 2012-09-13 09:15 pm (UTC)(link)
Will do, thank you. Much more fun over here without the Special Snowflakes getting into everything!

Too late! I'm already all up in yo Fandom Secrets, ruining everything with my Aspie-ness! You poor thing.

Re: DA

I believe people with Asperger's can ruin the world =D

Re: DA

Yes. I'm totally a "bigot" for not believing every single word that comes out of every single anon/person who types shit up on the net.

Yep, you caught me.

*slow claps*

Go. Go have a nice drink of that shit tasting wine you have that comes out of the high horse's ass you rode in on!!

Re: DA

[personal profile] riddian 2012-09-15 06:35 pm (UTC)(link)
It's not hard to catch the similarity in attitude when the resemblance is so striking. You're so caught up in your rigid, angry absolutism that it probably hasn't even entered your mind that I might not be advocating to always believe everyone ever on the internet. You seem to have assumed that I think Asperger's is a valid reason to get away with shit, too. Looks like you're 0 for 2.

You are much more creative with the insults than curseangel though, so at least you've got something going for you.
otakugal15: (Default)

Re: DA

[personal profile] otakugal15 2012-09-15 06:45 pm (UTC)(link)
No. I don't think you see it as a valid reason to get away with shit. I'm just saying, ON THE INTERNET, I don't believe people who state they have it WHEN THEY ARE BEING DICKS. I also don't believe them when they just HAVE to state it in some conversation, especially when it has no relevance or bearing on the situation/topic/what have you. Those who do have it usually DON'T say it unless they feel it's necessary. And even then, I'll take it with a grain of salt unless I know them personally. Because people DO hide behind that just to get away with stuff or to garner sympathy or attention.

That is what I believe the OP of the original secret meant and what a lot of people seem to be missing.
riddian: (ORLY?)

Re: DA

[personal profile] riddian 2012-09-17 04:00 am (UTC)(link)
People "seem to be missing" that because it isn't stated in the secret anywhere. Don't you think it's just a wee bit ironic to be ascribing and reading that much altered intent to a secret that begins with a rant about how easy it is to control what you say on the internet? OP had plenty of time to put this secret together, reread it, consider possible interpretations, change wording, etc. But ze says "[I] will never ever believe anyone on the internet who says they have autism." How hard would it have been to add in a modifier of some kind? I am forced to conclude that OP really meant "never ever," or else is a flaming moron.

I'm happy to disagree with them either way, because there is no actual proof either way when a person says they're on the spectrum, and while they could easily be lying/misdiagnosed, the internet is such an Aspie paradise that it's just as likely to be true. And since you shouldn't treat them differently regardless, it's kind of a moot point, and going "WELL I DON'T BELIEVE YOU HAHA!" and talking about how you'd have to meet them IRL to personally diagnose them before they're allowed to talk about being an Aspie just comes off as dickish.

Re: DA

[personal profile] otakugal15 2012-09-17 08:09 am (UTC)(link)
Well, I can say the same thing: Don't YOU think it's a bit ironic to be ascribing and reading that much negativity into the secret when it's not even touched on at all?

No, you're just a bitter asshole who wants to believe that OP are also a bitter asshole when there is not proof either way to prove you're right, or me right. But I choose to be more positive about it than you. And that's your problem.

*never said she wasn't a dick*

Re: DA

[personal profile] riddian 2012-09-17 01:59 pm (UTC)(link)
Hurr wat. What part of the secret isn't negative? The rant about "there are no excuses," the part where ze is getting harassed and talks about how "they treat me like shit," or the bit where ze asks for help because it's a sucky situation?

For that matter, LMAO, since when are you being positive? Starting a conversation with "no, you're wrong, you can fuck off now" is not positive, bb.

Not only are you not addressing my point, you're making no sense while doing so.
