(Anonymous) 2012-09-14 02:20 pm (UTC)(link)As for Watson's background. It is, in fact, important in the way we understand and interpret Watson other than 'he can haz gun noa'. There are many, many more ways to explain the presence of a gun. Watson is Holmes's foil ("One that by contrast underscores or enhances the distinctive characteristics of another"). Holmes subverts authority, being smarter than the police and solving cases. Watson worked with authority in the army, but is still smart en fast enough to be interesting to Holmes.
And even if you don't accept that argument, at least think about this: there is an undeniable difference between 'war veteran and respected doctor' and 'no longer allowed to practice medicine'.
