The whole being a lying asshole thing?

Paul Ryan strikes me as being, on a personal level, a sincere, intelligent person who is honestly trying to make the world a better place. It's just that he sincerely believes some deeply incorrect, fucked-up things that would be absolutely terrible and harmful for this country and its people. I haven't seen anything to suggest that he's particularly an asshole in his every-day life.

I think in some ways that's a lot more frightening. (I'm also fairly uncomfortable with making judgments and attacks about the personal character of people with whom we disagree; it seems, I don't know, dangerous.)

He may or may not be an asshole in his personal life, but he really does seem to have a problem with truthfulness about both political and personal issues in his public statements. Even compared to other politicians. So I do question his sincerity a bit.

I would put that down to a lack of cognitive dissonance and the ability of even intelligent people to convince themselves of things that are not true, if they fit into their pre-conceived belief system.

But I'm speculating as much as you are. My point, I guess, is that I've seen nothing to indicate that he's an asshole in his private life, and I really wish that we wouldn't call him one solely on account of his political behavior because it's a bad road to go down, and because it tends to make us forget that good people can have beliefs that we vehemently disagree with. He believes horrifyingly wrong-headed things; he is not necessarily a bad or an unintelligent person.

I guess that's better than being some kind of horrifying, compassion-lacking robot who is unable to feel or express empathy.

I don't know enough about Ryan to want to make a judgement, but I am uncomfortable about the level of creative truth-telling he uses.

When someone has views that are racist, homophobic, and sexist, then I am by no means uncomfortable with making judgements on their personal character.

You mean, is he kind to his mother? Who knows? But I've seen enough of his political views and statements to surmise that he is singularly lacking in empathy towards his fellow humans, and pretty damn sexist, so I'm okay with calling him an asshole.
