Being spiteful is an mostly an American reality show standard. I watch Masterchef AU and the contestants are very respectful and helpful to each other despite the fact that they are competing. Most of the talking head segments are about how well they want someone to do or how they feel bad because someone didn't do well.

Some UK shows are less drama than their American counterparts. "Kitchen Nightmares," for example.

(I'm assuming you are watching American shows since we were talking about ASL the other day.)

(Yeah, I watch US shows.)

Huh, I guess I should try stuff from other countries. The nastiness in the US ones just rubs me the wrong way. If I wanted to despair about humanity I would watch the news.

Thank you for the recommendations.

I don't usually even watch tv, and the nastiness is why. I can't even stand to be in the same room as Toddlers and Tiaras and Dance Moms for all the nastiness and exploitation of children, it makes me feel ill.

But some shows are fun though.

That's good to hear.

I only have basic cable now but watch things on the internet. So I'm lucky in the fact I get to pick and choose.

I also mainly watch things on the internet. I usually only watch tv if my roommates turn it on. I only even have a tv because my roommates like them, I can go with or without. I have an unhealthy relationship with netflix and some dubious movie watching sites though xD

Ha, yeah. I get you. I don't have Netflix but my local library is very good. :)

Seems out watching habits are pretty similar.

Masterchef AU is definitely my favorite foreign reality show. I think they must love it in Australia too because there are always 80 or so episodes in a season. I liked Beauty and the Geek AU too.

If you have Netflix, Kitchen Nightmares UK should be on there.

For some reason I have a harder time getting a hold of Canadian shows. I'm curious about how they do their reality TV, if it's similar to the US.

I like to compare and contrast the way people are presented in each country's version of a show. I think the way "reality" is interpreted is kind of an interesting reflection of that country's overall values filtered through the lense of the media.

Oh wow, that's a lot of episodes. :o

I don't but I might be able to find it online maybe.

The only Canadian shows I know of are kids cartoons which were, admittedly, very good. However, I don't know much about their reality shows either.

Aha, that sounds cool and interesting. I'd hate to think about what US reality shows say then. Something about "everyone is horrible" might be it.

Yeah, Masterchef AU is big news over here, half the peeps on my twitter list live tweet it, it's always trending, etc. People are really pretty polite to one another. I always get shocked and kind of disgusted at how nasty US reality television is. Then I laugh.

Top Chef Canada is usually full of super nice people who all want to win fairly, so they support each other when they can. Last season I honestly couldn't tell you which of the three finalists I wanted to win, because they all deserved it.

I don't watch a lot of the backstabbing type of US reality shows, but the Canadian versions (when they exist) tend to be less melodramatic.

Oo, if you can find it you should watch Great British Bake-off. It's just lovely, and makes you actually want to have a go at baking.
