What interests me about his relationship with the girl is how it changed in this episode. I've seen them all so far, and never saw anything beyond some really nice friend-chemistry between them. Then in this episode - when she comes over to show him the tape - I started to see how they could work as a couple.

That scene was later revealed to be the first one that was actually a hallucination. So if that was a deliberate choice on the part of the director/actors, it might hint that the idea of them being together is largely in his head, which would delay the romance a bit.

(Probably not stop it altogether, though. When a pairing's being sold this obviously, it usually ends up becoming canon.)
