Well, it's got six main characters rather than one, and they will get about the same amount of space throughout the books (in the first book four of them are the "main" characters).

They are very realistic (Swedish) teens. I've met people like this. I recognised myself in a few of them.

They're very different without there being one who is obviously "right" while the others can't really live up to her perfection. In fact, not all of them get on, and it's not just for bad reasons.

The book is very good with gay and gender issues as well as socio-economic differences in that it's realistic; the issues exist, there are sometimes problems, but not always, and there are no didactics.

The supernatural parts are actually scary, and the mystery not easy to solve. There are a lot of surprises in the book!

There's a fantastic subversion of the "unpopular girl gets powers and becomes the most sought-after girl in school" plot. Pretty uncomfortable too, in a good way.

There's also a teeny tiny Lovecraft reference in it, which made me smile (the authors are fans). XD

Well, I'm sold. Thanks for the review! This sounds totally up my alley. :)
