Ugh, I hear you there. We used to really enjoy Orange County Choppers, because OMFG the work they did was amazing, and it was really cool seeing them take something from spit-balling designs through to a finished project, but we stopped partways through the first season because dude, why the fuck would I want to listen in on some family's private drama? I don't want to know that the dad is an asshole. I want to just enjoy the art and creativity and craftsmanship without feeling bad about how the son is treated.

Although I do have to admit that I do really enjoy Canada's Worst Handyman and Canada's Worst Driver, but there, (a) the drama of these guys coming together to learn their (much-needed) skills is an integral part of the show (where it really doesn't have anything to do with building a cool custom bike, IMO) and (b) the attitude of those shows is much more "Hey! Everybody's got difficulties but you guys can totally do this! We'll show you! :D" It's doesn't have that hurtful, "Hur hur these guys are morons lolll" nastiness that so turns me off other "Reality" shows.

I know how you feel. I was watching a show about a bunch of people make cakes. The cakes were BEAUTIFUL! But then they got into behind the scenes drama. I do not care about them not being nice to each other. What about the cakes?!

That sounds really sweet. Rather than, you know, nasty. :)

Well, they do take serious issues seriously (I mean, some of the things the guys do on Worst Driver, for example, could easily end up killing someone; sometimes it's an honest-to-god miracle that they haven't yet), and there is a certain amount of drama, but it's not just "Hurr these guys are stoopid." For example, Season 5, the punk guy, Jakob, has a wonderful character progression and ***SPOILERS*** becomes not only one of the most likable guys there, but also a really sensible driver-- although he does have to stay nearly all the way to the end to do it.

Actually, Season 5 is probably as good a place to start as any. They're a fun bunch of drivers, and heck, it's all up on YouTube if you want a look. :-)

Ah, I don't want to sound cold-hearted. It was mostly just that the nasty drama was obviously manufactured and stretched to make the cake making more interesting while I'm sitting here going, "No! The cakes were that interesting. I want to see how they... I missed it for that?"

I'll definitely have to check it out. Thank you for the rec.
