I know they behave like cat ears (moving about in representation of emotional state), but there's no indication that they're used for hearing or not. The author uses them as a device to show the social ramifications of what it would be like if we had a physical marker for sexual status... or at least, that's what the wikipedia article says. And if it's on wikipedia, it must be truths.

I don't actually read the series. But I've seen pictures, and the ears aren't proportionate. In fact they're not 'proportionate' on cats, either - feline eyes and ears are larger then than would be expected to the size of the skull. lol evolution, etc.

From what little I know of Loveless (the basic plot outline etc) the author needs to retake a Soc course or two =\
