So...he kills the woman who lied the whole time about his wife being dead for selfish reasons and allows him to kill said wife, and you lose most respect for him for *that*?

I think my brain broke.

I've have lost respect for him if he DIDN'T kill her.

If you are going to be a murdering lunatic, at least have the focus to remember the ones that actually wronged you!

Yeah. Especially a vengeful murdering lunatic. You can't be all "Oh that's ok, you meant well, forgiveness for you, special friend!"

Jesus, this, even if she was somewhat likeable in a peculiar kind of way.

How did she allow him to kill his wife? Whenever Lucy tried entering her pie shop, she had Toby kick her out. How was she supposed to know Lucy would sneak upstairs just as Sweeney was getting ready for Turpin?

She set the motions in place for it to happen, essentially, by her lying.

(Anonymous) 2012-09-14 11:13 pm (UTC)(link)
IMO, Mrs. Lovett is Judge Turpin's only competition for most monstrous character in the show.

(Anonymous) 2012-09-14 11:21 pm (UTC)(link)
I've not seen that version, but in the original musical, What's-her-face totes deserves it.

(More people should see the version with Angela Lansbury as that character. Deliciously creepy.)

Pretty sure the movie was quite faithful to the stage show, with some songs excluded (apparently all boring Joanna and whats-his-name stuff which we could live without) and yeah, she definitely deserved it in the movie too.

AYRT

Oh, really? The theatre prof that showed it in class seemed to think differently...but then I was enjoying my bed the day he showed the HBC and JD version in class.

(Anonymous) 2012-09-15 01:57 am (UTC)(link)
I think Lovett was a little more sympathetic in the movie. She seemed to care more about Toby and was more upset/conflicted about what to do with him when he discovered Sweeney had killed that other guy.

(Anonymous) 2012-09-14 11:56 pm (UTC)(link)
Eeeh, I think that both Sweeney and Mrs. Lovett are completely monstrous, but at least Mrs. Lovett was monstrous in an entertaining way, unlike woe-is-me-Sweeney.

(Anonymous) 2012-09-15 12:06 am (UTC)(link)
You're the kind who hates characters (and possibly real people) for having "too many" emotions, aren't you?

I'm not saying that he wasn't monstrous and there weren't many absolutely terrible things about him, but "he was sad" was not one of them.

(Anonymous) 2012-09-15 05:32 am (UTC)(link)
Things that would be perfectly reasonable in real people may not be entertaining to watch in fictional characters.

It is not wrong to want to be entertained by fictional characters and to dislike characters who didn't entertain you. Even if the reason they didn't entertain you would not be considered a problem in real life.

"You're the kind"

Yeah, because disguised ad hominem is always a good way to support your feeble point.

Admittedly, as they removed the totally awesome "Ballad of Sweeney Todd" from that version (my favorite song :(, you didn't get the full experience. Okay, that had little to do with the secret, but I'm still pissed that they took it out.

Frankly, I respected him a lot more for killing her. She was really, truly super-duper evil. So was he, but you take what you can get.

I was more unhappy that they removed most of the humour.

I lost respect for him in that second and a half where I thought he wasn't going to kill her.

(Anonymous) 2012-09-15 12:36 am (UTC)(link)
I have no respect for both of them. Todd is fucked up and Lovett is an obsessed stalker. Also, they're BOTH murderers.
But Lovett was cute, so I was a little bit "aww" when she died.
The boy killing Sweeney was awesome, though!

(Anonymous) 2012-09-15 09:54 am (UTC)(link)
I felt kind of similarly, but it wasn't that he killed her, it was how. Burning is an especially terrible way to go.
