Hey guys. Let's try this again. I put this up pretty late last time and so got no responses so yeah.

I've finished a 4.5 k word fill and I want to know if I should get a beta not only to sniff out bad grammar but also because I'm writing about a sensitive topic.

So, what do you guys do when you write for kink memes? What would you suggest I do?

I don't personally write and I have no idea where one goes to find a beta for a kink meme fill, but if the topic is a sensitive one I'd think it would be a good idea? It couldn't hurt, anyway. (Couldn't hurt re: grammar, too.)

Do you have anyone you use as a beta for your non-kink meme fic? If you feel comfortable sharing this fic with them, I think it'd be okay to ask them. Otherwise, you might be able to use some of the same techniques you might use to find a beta for a non-kink meme fic: check beta comms and posts for people who are willing to beta, consider contacting fandom acquaintances whom you trust, etc.

Of course, if this is a fic that you're shy about approaching people for or being un-anon on, I can understand how that would make it more difficult.

Another possibility is to see if there are any un-anon people who frequent the kink meme who seem really good at giving good feedback, or who are willing to give constructive criticism. If they've expressed interest in fics that are similar to yours, they may be cool with being asked about betaing.

If you definitely don't want to be un-anon: you could consider asking for feedback in spaces that allow anonymous interaction. Even if you can't get feedback on your writing, you could probably get some opinions about how to handle your topic, as long as you choose the right place to ask.

Finally, if you do plan to de-anon on this fic eventually, there's also the option of doing the best you can with the fic now, and then getting a beta if necessary when the time comes to re-post it on your LJ/AO3/FF.net account/etc. You don't want to short-change your kink meme readers by giving them a knowingly sub-par fic, but in my experience, it's pretty common for people to edit kink meme fills and repost them. It comes down to how confident you are about your ability to put out a decent fic on the kink meme sans beta.

This is my second fic I've ever written so I don't have a beta. I should look at the Beta comms then. Would you have a link to one? I can do it un-anon. I'll just have to get the courage to talk to people un-anon outside of this comm.

No problem! I hope it helps. I have trouble finding betas sometimes, too, and yeah, it can be a dilemma with kink meme fills.

I don't know of many active, multi-fandom beta finding comms. There's beta_search on LJ (http://beta-search.livejournal.com/), but I've never used it, so I can't vouch for how useful it is.

Sometimes fandoms will have their own beta finding comms, or main fic comms will have links to posts where people can seek and volunteer beta services. The challenge is finding one that's active and up-to-date.

I've never used a beta for my writing, but if you're uncertain about whether or not you're treating a topic with the sensitivity it deserves, and you are comfortable with at least one person knowing that it is you writing the fill, then I'd say go and find a beta. You could possibly put out a request on the prompt itself saying that you've completed a fill for it but aren't comfortable posting it without it being beta'd first and would anyone be interested in beta-ing? I dunno.
