Anime series rec?

Not something too dark, or WTF. So nothing like Madoka or Clamp-esque. Shonen/Shoujo okay. Not too fond of scifi.

Ladies versus Butlers! has quite a bit of fanservice but it's uber fun. Kaichou wa Maid-sama! and Ouran High School Host Club are also fun, high-school setting anime series.

NANA
Toradora!

Baccano!
Durarara!!
Clannad

Can I suggest Tiger and Bunny? I have no idea if that's to your taste or not, but man did I love that anime. I have nothing else to suggest since other than that one (and Fullmetal Alchemist, which at times can be pretty dark), I haven't watched anime in years.

Seconding Tiger & Bunny! I've shown that to a lot of "different genre" fans since I've watched it, and nobody has disliked it so far. :)

I will recommend Baccano! until I diiiie (pictured in my icon)

Kids on the Slope is pretty good too (Sakamichi no Apollon)

And Natsume Yuujinchou

Juuni Kokki
Vision of Escaflowne
Mushishi
Whispers of the Heart
She and Her Cat

And eh, why not: the 2001 version of Hellsing (it wasn't dark to me, tbh. I just liked the music and the visual style)
caecilia: (bel)

Tsuritama has aliens, but it's mostly about fishing and the power of friendship.

...man, idk, every anime I know of has a lot of WTF. Slayers is an old one but pretty good, if you like fantasy/humor.
terabient: Tsubaki and Noel side-by-side, wearing yukata (Blazblue: Tsubaki/Noel festival)

Kuragehime/Princess Jellyfish (it's about a really awkward, shy college girl and her crossdressing friend, so not as weird as the title may make it seem)

Hidamari Sketch and Azumanga Daioh are high school slice-of-life comedies that don't have any romance angle--I love both shows to bits, but they can get really cutesy and twee, if that's something you'd rather avoid.
