Me too. That line was pure cheese. I don't understand why there needs to be these thousand word theses defending it.

Fans like to defend the things they like, and it's a function of fandom as a community built around expanding on already-existing works of fiction that we pretty much operate by default on "Analyze and justify exactly what's there as if the characters are real people with agency and real things organically happen to them" mode.

It's not so much defending the line as cheesy or uncheesy, but like the anon above me said, what it means in an in-universe context.

Although, tbh, superheroes without cheese is like James Bond without womanizing, so there's gonna be a bit of genre-specific acceptance going on as well. ;)

Seriously, that "you can be damned sure we'll avenge it" line is the fucking worst.

Oh thank god someone agrees.

I get so much second hand embarrassment from that line I literally can't even bring myself to look at the screen while he saying it.

I will agree with you that that line was cheesy as fuck. And as much as I analyzing things as if they were real, sometimes I just want to talk about why things were written the way they were or what they conveyed/why they were the most effective way to write it. Contemplating the characters' inner conflicts and subtextual secret feelings -- been there, done that, bought the t-shirt. But real people have gotta answer for every single thing they do and say and every single thing that happens to them, all of which could have happened countless varyingly effective ways because they're not faithfully recording historical events, and sometimes I just wanna know why they made some of these choices.

For example, who is responsible for "I have a plan: Attack"? I have a bone to pick with that guy.
