Calling out people in LJ communities

(Anonymous) 2012-09-15 11:02 am (UTC)(link)
Okay, so. I belong to two pretty big LJ communities, and I've got to say, I'm getting pretty disgusted with how they treat certain members. User 1 is getting loads of hate/snark for posting anything these days. This stems from a comment they made in one community that wasn't "SJ approved" resulting in them being mocked every time they post something. Another member (user 2) gets away with everything (recounts rude behaviour/breaks rules in their posts and gets patted on the back, "OMG UR SO AWESOMEZ" comments, etc.) because they're gay and popular (YES, it's because they're gay - they make a point of mentioning it in every post and say how "cool" their gayness is). Do you think I should say anything to the mods, or just leave the communities? I'm tired of seeing user 1 get bullied by the SJ users, but if I speak up against user 2, I'll be branded homophobic and probably turned into a pariah like user 1 was.

Flip a coin.
Heads you stick up for user 1.
Tails you leave the comms.
After you've flipped that coin - how do you feel about making that decision?
Only you will know what the right decision is, OP.

(Or, you could do both - stick up for user 1 and THEN leave the comms.)

If you're not enjoying the comms because of these things, then it wouldn't be a bad idea to leave, regardless. So I say, stick up for user 1 and discuss the rule-breaking of user 2 with the mods, and then peace out. If you still want to read comm content, you can always lurk.

I've been in a similar situation, however in my comm the mods where part of the problem. They jumped right in with the picking on this one member and congratulating the jerks. I ended up not just leaving the community but also PMing the user that was being picked on and letting them know that I saw what was going on and how I thought it wasn't cool etc. They answered back with a big thank you, thinking before that they were all alone and feeling pretty upset.

So I suggest at the very least PMing the User 1 and just letting them know you see what's going on and disagree with it. Sometimes there's nothing you can do to stop the bullying, but there's something you *can* do to at least make the person feel less alone.
