It could be because in most media (including the show referenced by the pic) the nice guy is also the boring guy. Fictional bad boys are always more interesting...

Yup. And this trope is so pervasive (and has been for such a long time) a lot of people, especially in fandom, don't even realize it's a trope. This reminds me so much of a quote from Simone Weil:

"Imaginary evil is romantic and varied; real evil is gloomy, monotonous, barren, boring. Imaginary good is boring; real good is always new, marvelous, intoxicating."
