Re: Favorite and Least Favorite Works of Prose You Had to Read in High School

As far as I recall it was never the stories themselves that were bad or hard to read. It was the intensity of having to analyzable EVERY SINGLE DETAIL of every page of the story to pick out all the hidden meanings. And when it came time to do a test on those books it didn't matter how you had interpreted it personally the ONLY correct answer was whatever the teacher insisted was correct, like I don't know Simon in Lord of the Files being a "Christ" figure or something - what ever the heck that actually meant.

Yeah I know there has to be some stuff set in stone so you can test that someone actually read the book completely but it still felt like there wasn't any room for other interpretations or flexibility.

Silas Marner by George Eliot reads oddly like babyfic.

Lol that's actually true (although it doesn't make him look any less hot). But I had this gifset in mind when writing the comment :D

Re: The moment you gave up a tv show - Glee

Glee

The episode where Finn came out on Santanna's behalf. That was all about Finn.

There was a lot of shit before that. But that was the tipping point for me.

No, I implied people from non-wealthy countries don't worry about L'Oreal Paris or whatever the fuck was being thrown out upthread as what Loki should dunk his head in.

There's a difference between personal hygiene and the ridiculous amounts of "hygiene" products being pushed on people. Water and something mildly textured to scrub with will generally do the trick.

People in India bathe in the Ganges, one of the most heavily-polluted rivers in the world. In addition to the general random crap and silt from erosion, there is both animal and human sewage in the river. When it floods around here, we run around with our skirts hiked up going, "don't play in the poop water"! We run around believing myths about how bad it is to have your pet cat or dog on the bed with you, while herders in Africa sleep next to their cattle - sometimes even huddled up against them for warmth and mutual protection. I'm afraid we're the ones with the messed-up sense of what's "gross" and "unhygienic," not the non-wealthy world.

*analyze not analyzable - I selected the wrong word from the corrected spelling list and didn't notice... oops.

You never know; you might share fandoms with them again someday. Hell, you could try out some of the stuff they're into now, see if it interests you.

No, I think that because the 50+ crowd is by far and away the largest book-buying demographic. Most "adult" literature is geared to boomers. It's just a fact. "90%" being hyperbole of course, like I would (sincerely) hope the "95% of YA readers are immature adults who live with their parents and can't get a job" was.

So you mean Mark Haddon's large collection of Youth-oriented novels? You read YA yourself, then? That's not what I would have expected, anon. I haven't read him because I don't read YA.

Ugh, Mark. I watched until he passed, and that episode is heart-wrenching. I stopped watching after that.

And the "shitting on a character for no reason" clause is part of the reason why I'm still debating watching the last season of House, MD.

Re: Rec me a book (for Kindle).

Uh, not the anon you replied to but I'd definitely be interested in such a thing. I've read some Tamora Pierce but don't think I've read anything with femmeslash and that sounds like it'd be wonderful.

BAHAHAHAHA

(Anonymous) 2012-09-15 11:03 pm (UTC)(link)
I think what they were trying to imply is that the cosmetics industry and related industries have conditioned many wealthier people to have overly-restrictive standards of appearance. Less wealthy people are often not as affected by this because they don't have the same access to media and/or aren't as able, for economic reasons, to try to live up to the standards.

The commenter was probably thinking that having non-greasy hair shouldn't be considered a necessary part of hygiene. Whether it should be, I don't know. I mean, does having greasy hair pose any kind of health risk? Genuinely asking, here. If not, I don't think it should be considered a societal requirement.

See section "For Adults." I've never read his YA titles.

It SHOULD, but I'm not sure the fandom is invested enough in Thor to care about Thor/Thor. Which saddens me, but...what can you do? I'm going to give it some time then search for it though.

Hell, maybe I should prompt it at the kink meme...(or see if someone else has prompted it)

Vibrator, because of TMI reasons.

The finale was pretty bad and the whole series had a lot of issues.

I'll still watch the second season because I'm hoping it will improve.

(Anonymous) 2012-09-15 11:07 pm (UTC)(link)
I find this comment hilarious, because objectively Benedict Cumberbatch is weird looking too.

Hmm, I've sen a lot of "well Elementary's Holmes nicer than the other Holmes" but wasn't the original Holmes not as much of a douche-wad as everyone makes him out to be? Like, he actually laughed and was nice to people sometimes and wasn't completely unsympathetic.

And I like that they didn't cast Lucy Liu as Holmes, because I like the way they're going against the grain of "white male geniuses can never be called out for their behavior".

That Deadpool cosplayer strikes again

Most of you have probably watched this already but:

Whoa whoa - Casablancas and DW? Am I missing something?

(Anonymous) 2012-09-15 11:08 pm (UTC)(link)
The majority of BNFs I've seen aren't actually all that good at writing (IMO, obviously). It amazes me that they're the BNFs when there are far better writers going practically unnoticed.

Or maybe I'm the one with bad taste in fanfic. :D

Plot Bunny Vent.

[personal profile] al28894 2012-09-15 11:08 pm (UTC)(link)
A place where you vent your plot bunnies that have been eating your mind and you KNOW can't work...

I'll start.

"As a result of Yukari fooling around with the Great Hakurei Barrier, various characters from multiple timelines got transported to other worlds.

Ai Haibara from Detective Conan (aged down) somehow ended up outside Ezio Audtitore's family home Pre-Canon. It also resulted in Phineas and Ferb being transported to Len and Rin's palace Daughter of Evil also in Pre-Canon. Meanwhile, Kogasa Tatara somehow got transported to, of all worlds, the Mass Effect universe where she bumps into Pre-Canon Garrus and scares the crap out of him. After that, both Garrus and Pre-canon Ezio ended up in Gensokyo right in front of Suwako Moriya.

Now all of these characters must find a way to work together and (from a few genre-savvy people) try and screw their universe's destiny against their original doomed timelines (especially for the AC, ME and Daughter of Evil universes)."

...
...

HOW DOES THAT EVEN MAKE ANY SENSE, BRAIN.

It is a very fun episode, but bear in mind that it is very much written for a family viewing experience. So, as well as the things you will find awesome, it has plenty of bits that a child would find awesome and you will probably find annoying. If you cannot arrange to watch it with a child, so you can properly enjoy those bits, consider imagining a child laughing themselves into those deep chuckles that sound like they might actually laugh themselves sick, rolling around a bit and pointing.

Wait by "don't be a girl" does she mean don't be ~weak or whatever or don't be immature?

Nah, despite hating season 1, the ones complaining actually wanted the show to be good and are hoping that since more writers were called in to help w/ season 2 that it'll be better. They'll be back. :)
