Brian May, the guitarist. He already had an undergraduate degree and had actually completed about 99% of the work required for his doctorate before he decided to commit himself fully to Queen. His dad was piiiiiiiissed that someone that highly educated would run off with a rock band instead, lol. But he went back and completed his doctorate in astrophysics just a few years ago.

This. It's sad to see the people with mediocre fic getting all the attention when there's people out there who write so much better and so much more in-character.

I can't stand Destiel. I just can't. Especially because the fans of that only do it because Jensen and Misha are two pretty men. I can't see Castiel that way. I just see an Angel who is walking around in another man's body. (Jimmy Novak) And for Castiel to have sex with Dean while being in Jimmy's body is just ick when you realize that Jimmy had no say in the matter. And would probably object because he doesn't feel that way about Dean. Like how would like if someone took over your body and had sex while using your body with someone you did not want to sleep with?

Re: Dildo or vibrator?

(Anonymous) 2012-09-15 11:31 pm (UTC)(link)
Dildo. They don't need batteries or recharged, and I've heard (from women I know IRL, no studies or anything) that too much vibration in your bits makes you lose sensitivity. :/ I'm a manual girl myself, so I've never tested this.

(Anonymous) 2012-09-15 11:32 pm (UTC)(link)
No, I specifically meant in the UK, because they posted at 8:05pm UTC and the episode didn't end its first broadcast until later than 8:05pm (it started at 7:35pm). However, I had momentarily forgotten that we are still in British Summer Time, and so UTC gives a time an hour behind the clocks.

(Anonymous) 2012-09-15 11:32 pm (UTC)(link)
That's basically me. The story and most characters sucked but as long as there's kung fu and shit blowing up I'm gold.

(Anonymous) 2012-09-15 11:33 pm (UTC)(link)
this is kind of a douchecanoe way of saying it, but I don't think you're too far off base. Certainly the reason I read is for escapism because my life isn't perfect (I'll never be a superhero or a pirate or an astronaut after all), and my current state is sort of in limbo due to the sucky economy (ie, I have a job but I have to live with my parents because I can't afford to live alone). So yeah there's probably some grains of truth in this otherwise bowl-of-diarrhea comment.

Re: The moment you gave up a tv show

(Anonymous) 2012-09-15 11:35 pm (UTC)(link)
I have a lots of feelings, because I used to love all of these shows (or series of shows in case of SGU).

Bones: The beginning of season 6. It was too romance drama than a crime show and I started to actively dislike most of the characters.

HIMYM: When they affirmed Robin/Barney is the endgame. I was thinking about stopping watching it for a long time but that was the end for me.

SGU: at the end of the first season...the producers were messing too much with the mythos plus the unsympathetic characters plus the stupid storylines plus the producers acting like dicks towards the fanbase (that was, you know, keeping your show alive)...yeah.

Sherlock: After a Scandal in Belgravia. God, I hated it. I found problematic stuff before in Sherlock, but that was it.

Torchwood: I'd like to say Children of Earth but it probably was the ending of season 2. I was really pissed off that Tosh died, since she and Ianto were my reason to stand Gwen (and Jack) and watch it. Then Children of Earth came and the last person I cared about there died and the story wasn't really...good so I stopped watching.

Re: Dildo or vibrator?

(Anonymous) 2012-09-15 11:35 pm (UTC)(link)
If you like both, a vibrating dildo/other insertable vibrator. Then you can use it as a vibe, or as a dildo with the vibe function off or both at the same time. I prefer an egg/bullet vibrator for clit action; it's is fairly insertable but not in the same way as a more phallic toy. Vibe + glass dildo is good.

I've had the opposite experience. My new roommate loves Twilight and the Hunger Games, and, like you, I had some pretty severe misgivings about this coming from a 32-year-old woman. Yet... she's one of the sweetest, kindest, most mature and thoughtful people I've ever met. She just likes vampires and proms. Who knows, maybe she felt the same way about me the first time she saw my model airplanes.

Seriously though nasty, insecure co-workers are the worst and I don't blame you for resenting them. But I don't think their tastes in literature reflect the literature itself so much as the popularity of the literature. I remember when everyone in my office was rabidly attached to Survivor and Survivor-related gossip. Then it was American Idol. Now that those have died down in popularity, it's all Twilight and the Hunger Games. It's popular tripe, something easily accessible to almost everyone so they'll have something to talk about around the office - something to bond over. Same reason a lot of men watch sports they don't even care about; a low-brow, automatic conversation piece that everyone can get it on.

At least these ladies are (ostensibly) reading.

Someone already prompted it, though going through the last three days of prompts looking for it was a bummer (and made me doubt it'll be filled).

So little Thor, man. D: It reminds me why I never really tried to get into Avengers fandom.

(I did comment though! So hopefully someone will take an interest in the prompt.)

Avengers: The goddamn thing with Thor and poptarts. HE IS A GROWN MAN WITH WONDERFUL MUSCLES. HE EATS OTHER THINGS, I PROMISE.

...actually, a lot of the fanon in Avengers fandom annoys me, but that's by far the worst. Avengers fandom, why can't I quit you?

... I get that alcoholism is not a conscious choice. I'm talking about *people who intentionally drink to excess*. i.e. binge drinkers. Those binge drinkers who binge drink infrequently enough that they are not alcoholics. Or, hell, people who get drunk, full stop. Even if I get drunk once, am I not escaping?

But fine, if we're talking about fandom... have you read Animorphs? It's a sci-fi series for ten-to-twelve-year-olds. It's just been rereleased.

How many of the people reading this series right now, whether as kids or adults, will almost be killed multiple times at any point in their lives? Not every single person. How many will be forced to risk their lives for their families? Not all. How many will be forced to kill someone in cold blood? Again, not everyone.
And yet that is what those kids do. They grapple with the morality of murdering their enemies - who, by the way, are slugs who paralyse people and trap them inside their own minds. The series talks about bullying, war, the value of hope over despair, bravery over cowardice. And, sure, you can say, "Oh, the real world isn't that simple". But I, for one, think that there is much more value in children's and YA fiction than most people give it credit for. I'm just saying, not every YA book is a carbon copy of Twilight.

Shade of Grey by Jasper Fforde, since people brought it up in another thread. It is good, and weird, and horrifying, and fun, and has nothing to do with the porn book currently in the bestseller lists.

Here's an idea: Rec the stuff you like, express that it means as much to you as their YA novels and you would appreciate it if they gave it a try. Approach things tactfully and honestly. Not, "Read this; it's much better than the crap you're reading," but "This reminds me of something I like to read. It might not be your usual genre, but I would like it if you gave it a try."

Don't bottle this stuff up or assume that they're not going to give it a chance, even if you think you know them pretty well. Bottling it up is just going to make you angry at them for liking these things, which is clearly something you don't want to do. And if your friends are still not into it, well, that's life. Find some people you can relate to in that way. There are thousands of people out there. :3
