That is because Sherlock Holmes never was an addict. He occasionally used cocaine. It never controlled his life; he went without it for months without problems or cravings. That is not addict. It is the same as a person who goes on an drinking binge once every so often and doesn't drink in between.

Is it unhealthy and dangerous? Hell yes.

Is it an addiction? No.

Re: Rec me a book (for Kindle).

(Anonymous) 2012-09-16 06:38 am (UTC)(link)
No, it's the first (and so far, only) in a different series, by the same author. Really excellent: I think it's the best thing he's written.

The Office after Michael left. I watched a few shows after, just because I was curious, and they were utter crap. Even the commercials suck. I'm so relieved that this is their last season, so it can finally just die quietly in a corner.

SAME.

(Anonymous) 2012-09-16 06:41 am (UTC)(link)
If it's making you that unhappy, maybe you don't like it as much you think? I mean, I like a lot of problematic songs for being catchy because they're much more fun than they're gross, and others I have to pass by because they're more gross than they're fun. There's gotta be a balance.

Maybe you could find an instrumental online somewhere?

(Anonymous) 2012-09-16 06:44 am (UTC)(link)
I don't get why people keep saying canon Sherlock Holmes was nicer, politer.

He really, really wasn't; he was as rude as he could be within Victorian society and just a bit ruder than was necessary.

My sister is a Directioner and said that they baby from the monstrosity that is masquerading as fic is the daughter of the make-up artists. I hope that pedo goes to jail.

(Anonymous) 2012-09-16 07:04 am (UTC)(link)
Yes I think you've nailed it. I've really noticed this. I came into online fandom relatively late, only about four years ago, and really quickly was struck by the whole BNF thing. I thought it was ridiculous, just like the school playground and the popular kids all over again. I kept wondering why people seemed so desperate for these internet BNFs, who they don't even know, to like them.

It wasn't just the gushing reviews on their fics, it was if they weighed in on some kind of Fandom wank, and laid down their BNF opinion, so many would suck up. I made the mistake early on of disagreeing with BNFs in these situations, only to have their minions tell me I was stupid and wrong. Usually BNFs are above responding to everyone.

I don't know if I'd call her a role model regardless. I don't know enough about her to know if she's done anything to earn that label.

But in terms of school, I feel a little differently if it's someone who already has a career in acting/modeling vs. someone who doesn't. In her case, she'd already started acting, and achieved fame, before going to university. I don't know how much she's worth, income-wise, but hopefully it's enough so that with careful planning, she can afford to pursue her education on her own time and support herself for a while if the jobs start dwindling.

I'm more concerned about people who forego an education in favor of a career in the arts when they have no background or prior success in those fields. It can definitely work, but it's much riskier. Most young people who decide to focus on acting or modeling don't have lucrative careers as child actors behind them.

I couldn't have done that. Too problematic.

(Jokes about activism are always problematic no matter how well intentioned because laughing is a weakness, I always sign a consent waiver and have several personal moments of reflection before any sexual act)

(Anonymous) 2012-09-16 07:19 am (UTC)(link)
Some of it's been bashing and tiresome shipwar stuff, but the show also had some serious pacing/storytelling problems and basically sort of failed to live up to its potential.

(Anonymous) 2012-09-16 07:23 am (UTC)(link)
Looks like you should read those yourself.

[personal profile] citrinesunset 2012-09-16 07:26 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, that is annoying.

Maybe they meant to say they loved it so much that they wish there was more, but expressed themselves poorly? That's the nice possibility.

I know right? Like a bunch of mosquitoes.

[personal profile] manifold 2012-09-16 07:28 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, you've pretty much got it. If it was about their fic, their opinions on wank and such would be irrelevant, and disagreeing with them wouldn't be this Great Horrible Crime—nor would so many people be making a completely useless show of defending their beloved BNF.

It might also be a desire to become a BNF by riding the coattails of a BNF, though. I have actually witnessed a (former) friend basically become a BNF by association, so it isn't necessarily a wasted effort. Though it is kind of like banking on winning the lottery. She got the initial starter followers from friendship with a BNF, started roleplaying slash with a better known RPer, got a few more followers, started WRITING slash with co-authors, etc., and then the ball was really rolling. Famous People's Asses + Your Lips = FAMOUS YOU

It was so surreal when she had fans and hadn't written anything but het original fiction that none of them had read. You'd think the slash would precede becoming a slash BNF, but no. Audience determined her medium, I guess? Big Name first, Fan second.

Meanwhile I write gen and side characters and Unpopular Pairings and no one has ever heard of me. Which is EXACTLY how I like it.

Re: Dildo or vibrator?

[personal profile] citrinesunset 2012-09-16 07:35 am (UTC)(link)
Dildos are fun to look at, but they don't do much for me.

Vibrators are great.

Re: Where do people masturbate?

[personal profile] citrinesunset 2012-09-16 07:37 am (UTC)(link)
In bed or at my desk. These days, frequently at my desk because, uh, porn and all. I don't find doing it in bed messy at all, though.

The shower doesn't work because it takes me way too long. Standing in the shower for a half hour while the water gets cold doesn't appeal to me.

You all cross a channel and you're in another continent.

If people from the UK cross the channel, they are still in the same continent.

Re: Is there a different term for double penetration when it is in the same hole?

(Anonymous) 2012-09-16 08:07 am (UTC)(link)
Same... I always assumed that was the point of using the word 'double'. I mean, being penetrated vaginally and anally is being penetrated twice, but I'm not sure I'd consider it double... if that makes sense. XD

Re: The moment you gave up a tv show

[personal profile] ginainthekingsroad 2012-09-16 08:19 am (UTC)(link)
Sometimes it's gradual. I stopped watching House regularly when Cuddy adopted that baby, and even less often when Kutner died, but I did still watch every so often after that. Lin-Manuel Miranda was reason enough to check in on season 6. But when Cuddy broke up with her bf (fiance?) for House in that search and rescue episode. That was it. Awful.

I gave up on Glee early: 1x13, Sectionals. I just didn't like any of the characters and I especially can't stand the arrangements of the songs. I've heard a little of where the show went from there, and wow I got out while things were still good!

Yeah, he seemed pretty disoriented and confused at the beginning.

It's not like it was necessarily caused by the teleporting between worlds, he indictated in Thor he'd done that lots.
True. And when he appeared behind Heimdall in Thor after his visit to Jötunheim he was perfectly composed.
