And this is why I'm hesitant about joining video game fandoms through watching LPs, despite not being able to afford video game consoles and being too busy to play through most of the games I'd like to play. Because some folks will think of me as a lesser fan and a "lazy cheater" despite the fact I'm doing the best I can with my limited resources and time to get into what seems like a very interesting video game fandom. I understand why OP feels the way they do but . . . yeah.

Although, at least they aren't just going off the game's Wikipedia page? There are just some things that can't be accurately construed through a Wiki profile, imho (although I'm sure someone could prove me wrong on that point).

join anyway, and just don't mention that you've only watched LPs or whatever. It's not like people go around demanding proof of your game save, and even by watching LPs you can still answer questions like favorite character/best level/etc.

The real key is knowing what the fuck you are talking about. Let's plays can do that. It's the people who only read fanworks that I can't stand personally.

basically, don't not know basic facts or have stupid theories/ask stupid questions, and nobody has to know!

ohplease

I'm heavy into the Mass Effect fandom and I've seen plenty who've played through who held stupid theories and asked stupid questions.

Playing the game isn't bullet-proof against being a dumbass.

And for as long as I've been in fandom, I've seen people who watch a show and still managed to be so OOC for characters it's painful. So who's going to really know if someone's played the fucking game or not?

You just like living in your ego-wanking world that YOU PLAYED THE GAME WOOOO!

get over it.

Played the game, read the story, listened to the fucking band's actual music...

Why stop with just the games?

Is it really so elitist to expect that people who are fans of something would follow the source material?

I'll judge the other dumb assess too. Just for different reasons!

But why should they have to, just to be able to say that they like some aspect of a thing, or participate in a fandom?
This makes absolutely no sense, to me.
Why is there so much "You must have followed [x] to enter here." shit in fandom? What does it accomplish?
Just correct people when they're wrong, and leave it at that.

To like something? No. But to talk about it within it's fandom? Yes. It's not so much to ask, IMO, that people wanting to talk about something know what they are talking about.

Edit: unless they are actually there to ask about it. That's different.

I get irrationally angry when someone comes trotting into fandom and it quickly becomes apparent all they know about it is what they've read through fic and the wikipedia.

I'm old school anime fan and when I saw this happening in Gundam Wing I was just GAH! It was clear pretty quickly they based their knowledge of the series from fanon in fanfic.

Drove me NUTS. They were impossible to have any kind of meaningful discussion with about the show.

If you have time to get into the fandom, surely you're not too busy to play a bit of the actual game first?
A lot of games on Steam go on sale for really cheap prices - though if you're only talking about console games, I understand your point as it is an expensive hobby.

you know what pisses me off? people who assume that their internet can handle steam.

not everyone has unlimited access to fast downloads, fuckwit. some people are stuck in the middle of fucking nowhere with slow-ass connections and very limited bandwidth caps.

like, me, for instance. I'm stuck in the back end of nowhere and have no choice but to use satellite. It's slow as fuck and unless I'm willing to pay $130/month for more than 500mb/day bandwidth limit (and that's not a bundle of cable tv, phone and internet. that's JUST internet) I'm screwed.

so no, it's not as easy as getting steam and getting games for cheap. there's still the 9GIG download part that some can't handle.

This is assuming the person has the actual money for the games, let alone time. Perhaps they watch LP's while lying in bed to wind down? That's what I do. I can't afford all the games I'm interested in - even with Steam. Which, as the above poster mentioned, not everyone can handle.
