That and because it's a relatively modern period piece, it's harder to write because there are still people alive from that area and people are more familiar than say the Middle Ages, where you can make up more because people kept less records. Fanfic becomes, research and then write fanfic, which people like less.

it's harder to write because there are still people alive from that area (era?)

Why would that make it harder to write about? People write fanfic about shows set in the present all the time

And I'd think it'd be easier to research the 1960s than medieval times. If anything you could probe your living relatives for material

Era...man, I need to check my spelling.

Oh, it would be easier to research because there is so much of 1960s stuff. And that's what makes it a pain. For a good fanfic for the show, people are going to want the details and probably already know most of the details of that era, so you would have to do MORE research than say, setting your fic in 13th century England, which most people only have a general knowledge of so you can use a general outline.

Or to put it another way, this is more likely a complaint you are going to get when writing a fic about the Mad Men era, "Dude, they didn't have those brand of cigarettes yet in 1960" and this is a less likely complaint you are going to get when writing a story set in 13th century English, "Dude, her dress description is all wrong. The sleeves weren't shaped that way and the hemline is too long."

Hm, well maybe it's just because I majored in history (with an emphasis on European history), but I would find it just as irritating to find anachronisms in a fic set in 13th century England as I would in a fic set in 1960s USA

I think people watch Mad Men with that same kind of attitude, though. "PFFT those typewriters weren't around in 1966!"

The writers and the actors of Mad Men have said that people have complained on those very minor details.

That's just ridiculous. I hate it when things are just, IN YOUR FACE anachronistic but minor things like that really don't matter much. How annoying.

To be fair, the typewriter was the focus of a scene and it was pretty glaring if you worked in offices. I think they said they tried to get the right ones but they couldn't find any. So I don't know if people were complaining so much as they couldn't help but say "Hey, that whole conversation and focus on that typewriter in a scene that was otherwise so period perfect? What's with the IBM Selectrix?"

Well, one of the great things about Mad Men is its extremely high production values and attention to minor details. It wouldn't be the same show if it regularly said, "fuck it, close enough." They even have the actors wear period underwear and discourage them from working out.
