In the comics, he's an artist and it's a pretty substantial part of his character (varies by arc and writer of course). At one point, he was actually a superhero comics illustrator.

It wasn't as big a thing in the movies, but he was shown sketching in both Captain America and a deleted scene of The Avengers, so I assume it's still part of his movie persona too.
