BNFs

Can you identify who the BNFs are in your fandoms? I've been in Supernatural fandom for quite a long time, and I still don't know who the BNFs are, or if there are any, and I don't know whether that happens to people in other fandoms, too.

I think it depends on what part of the fandom you're in. I could tell you who the slash BNFs were in Buffy back in the day but not really the het ones, for example. I think it also depends on what site you're using. AO3 makes it easy to tell who's popular by looking at kudos and hit counts.

I know who the BNFs are in my own little slice of fandom, but they might not be recognizable as such to someone a few circles over.

I know of one BNF in the LOST fandom who has expanded into other fandoms I'm into, but in my six years of fandom, she's the only one I've ever said, "Oh, she's gotta be a BNF." And yet, what if I'm wrong, and she's just a BNF to me because I like her work? You're not alone, anon.

I could name a few I'd consider BNFs, but really I only see one part of fandom? like, maybe people in the fandom on LJ/DW would know of them, but someone on YouTube or Tumblr or wherever might not.

Depends on your definition of BNF. Some people think of them as the authors with the most hits/reviews but I personally think BNF means people with the biggest name recognition in the fandom.

Nope! I don't pay any attention to the coming and going of names/people. I'm very much a lurker and float on the fringes of all my fandoms. I can probably hazard some guesses in regards to Big Name Author's - but that's mostly from a glance at the review/view/kudos number.

But I'm quite okay with not knowing. Seems to be a lot of drama focussed on if someone is a BNF or not.
