Question about fanfics

(Anonymous) 2012-09-17 01:19 am (UTC)(link)
How do you advertise a fanfic without being... uh, annoying?

I'd like more people to read my work and give me feedback, but I don't want to just spam links on communities. That just feels rude and attention-seeking.

Don't get me wrong, I'm happy that I've got a couple people reading my work and enjoying it. It's a joy to read their feedback and to know they like it. I mean, I know it's a dead fandom that's well over ten years old, so I should be thankful that anyone gives a crap at all. Should I just be happy with that?

What do you mean, 'span links on comms'? Do you mean, go to fandom-specific comms and link all your work? Or do you mean, post a link to a new/finished story in fandom specific comm?

If the fic is hard to come by and you have several finished works, i'd just make a little post with a brief summary and link to the fic, and put it all behind a cut with a short explanation about 'thought i'd put these out there for us die-hard fans' or whatever.

So long as you don't make a new post *for every fic* if they're old, or post more than once if they're new (per comm), i don't see an issue.

Well, I meant like going to all the active comms for that fandom that I can find (that are relevant to the fic) and posting an advertisement to them. I feel like I'm spamming when I do that, and that people will think I'm being rude. Especially if people are members of more than one comm, they might see the advertisement more than once.

Hrmmmm.... How many comms are there? Are some 'sister sites' or connected to each other in any way?

Maybe just make your post in a comm a week, starting with the most-active. That way you'll be able to see if you're generating any interest and you'll have time between postings for people to sort of 'forget'. So long as all the links work and you put any lists or long summaries behind a cut, i don't think it'll be a big deal.

Good luck!

*i'm a member of/watching more than Supernatural comm, and yes, i see the summary/link to the same fic more than once, if they are appropriate for each comm. it really doesn't bother me.*

With really old fandoms, I think that posting to AO3 and maybe ff.net may be more productive than just posting to DW/LJ. You're not as dependent on old comms being active.

I also crosspost to different platforms. I post my fic on my DW and LJ accounts, as well as AO3. Occasionally, I'll put up the link and header on my Tumblr. I don't feel bad doing this because those are all my accounts, and not other people's comms.

Yeah, I'm using AO3, FF.net, and tumblr... but I wondered if there's more I could do, or if that's enough. I just feel uncomfortable advertising, because it makes me feel like I'm attention-seeking.

...Well, it is attention-seeking. But in a bad way?

I rarely directly tell people to read my fic (unless they're close friends or whatever) but I've found that leaving a lot of meaningful reviews on other people's fic gets me reviews on mine.
