Er... that's not very specific. If you could give me the size and where in the world you happen to be that'd help a bit, though! If I had to identify it just based on what you've said, I'd hazard a guess that it could probably have been either Phidippus johnsoni, Phidippus carneus, or even Phidippus adumbratus, since they're all fairly common in North America which is where most people are from. Size and range is important because sometimes they can look similar, but P. johnsoni is usually under a centimetre and a half while P.. carneus is over that.

As for where to find information on bugs, I'd say bugguide.net (which I linked to) would generally be a good start! That and google is about all I could really point you to.

EDIT: Check out the insignarius group of Phidippus spiders! It was possibly one of them, they fit the red / white thing you described the best.

*headdesks at self* Oh man, I was totally going to mention location and then forgot! I feel silly. It was in southern Arizona.
