What if they write both original and fanfic? What. Then.

(Anonymous) 2012-09-17 02:59 am (UTC)(link)
does this happen? i know there are manga artists who do both...

imo, if theyre not published yet, theyre wasting their talent by writing something that cant be. they owe it to the public to write something that will be published and widely accessible

but i dont necessarily expect you to agree, not everybody agrees, i place a very strong value on ethics

don't be the other woman, don't pass up your chance to vote, etc. i know others dont agree so i dont rage against them, just lack respect for these choices

They owe it to the public...

No. They don't. Writing well in general is a lot of work, and frankly they don't 'owe' it to anyone to do that for something they don't want to do. Maybe they don't enjoy writing original fiction, maybe they just don't want to go through the hassel to get published. The reason really doesn't matter, the fact is the public doesn't have a right to demand someone publish books/short stories/whatever just because that person is good at writing, just like the public doesn't have a right to demand someone become a professional artist because they happen to be good at drawing*.

And all that is before you even begin to add in the fact that most people can't make a living at writing. Even some of the best known authors [including those who actually make a living off it] will point blank say that someone who wants to be a writer, no matter how good they are, really needs a back up plan because you just can't count on the money.

So, not only are you saying that they owe the public a lot of work, they owe it with a *really* shitty payment plan** on top of their day job. Which if they don't want to do it anyways, is a really crappy thing to demand...and something you have no right to demand in the first place.

Also, for your other two examples - a person doesn't always know their the other woman, and even the smartest people can be duped into believing something that they want to believe. As for voting, choosing not to vote can, and has been, used as a form of protest when groups believed that none of the candidates was a good choice.

*I'm meaning this for both original non-published work, and fan work.
** Remember, most writers don't make much money on their writing, and the chances of becoming the Rowling are very, very slim.
